    • A method and machine for the manufacture of packing containers of the type where a number of packing container blanks are successively converted to packing containers, open at the top, which are filled with contents, shaped and sealed. The packing container blanks are advanced intermittently during the processing and filling between the different stations, which means especially in packing machines with several conveying elements, that the driving unit of the machine will be unevenly loaded and that the working of the machine will be uneven and jerky. To overcome this it is proposed in accordance with the invention, that the driving of the different conveying elements sould take place asynchronously in accordance with a similar but mutually offset pattern of movement. The one conveying element (6') will then be substantially at standstill during the advance of the second conveying element (6") and vice versa, as a result of which the driving unit obtains an appreciably more uniform torque curve so that uneven operaton and consequent wear and noise can be prevented.

    • A carton bottom breaker for performing a prebreaking operation on the panels of a bottom closure structure of a coated paperboard carton mounted on a carton forming mandrel. A movable carrier member has a V-shaped breaker means fixed thereon which comprises a pair of outwardly sloping folder plates for operative engagement with the fold-over panels of the bottom closure of a carton. A spring biased V-shaped breaker plate member is movably mounted on the carrier member between the sloping folder plates in a plane transverse to the V-shape formed by the folder plates, and it is adapted to engage the fold-in panels of the bottom closure of a carton. A mandrel stop finger is carried by the V-shaped breaker plate member for abutment with the carton mandrel, in an off-center position, to prevent damage of the mandrel by engagement with the V-shaped breaker means and V-shaped breaker member.

    • An elongated carton supporting rail is mounted on a frame along with means for guiding an opened-out upright carbon blank to a predetermined position, with the edges of its bottom minor flaps resting on the rail. Flap closing elements automatically engage the bottom minor and major flaps of the carton in sequence immediately following the engagement of the carton with a switch lever when the carton is in the proper position on the rail. The minor flaps are folded above the carton supporting surface of the rail and in parallelism therewith, and the major flaps are folded below the carton supporting surface of the rail. The carton is then filled while supported on the rail, and thereafter is engaged by a pushing element and slid longitudinally off the discharge end of the rail.
