    • Mainly, local wall thinning is prevented. The invention relates to a vacuum forming method for fabricating a resin-molded article. The vacuum forming method includes pressing a thermoplastic resin sheet 201 softened by heating into a vacuum forming mold 202 using a core mold 203 to stretch and deform thermoplastic resin sheet 201 at the same time, and bringing the thermoplastic resin sheet 201 into intimate contact with the vacuum forming mold 202 by vacuum suction to shape the thermoplastic resin sheet 201. In the process of closing the vacuum forming mold 202 and the core mold 203, at least part of the thermoplastic resin sheet 201 is preshaped using air pressure in such a way that the at least part of the thermoplastic resin sheet 201 is locally stretched and deformed at the same time and thus brought into intimate contact with the core mold 203. Then, the thermoplastic resin sheet 201 is final-shaped by closing the vacuum forming mold 202 and the core mold 203 and performing vacuum suction through the vacuum forming mold 202.

    • This relates to the thermoforming of can bodies for use in packaging beverages under pressure from polyester sheet material, preferably PET. In accordance with the invention, a forming gas is applied to the periphery of the clamped sheet portion in radially outwardly spaced relation with respect to an associated mold cavity and the sheet material is billowed up into a large cavity formed in the clamp so as to provide for high stretching and orientation of the peripheral portion of the sheet before the sheet is directed into an associated mold cavity. Further, a plunger which normally forces the billowed or initially stretched sheet into the mold cavity may be constructed so as to be radially expandible to thus positively radially expand the sheet material within the mold. The operation of the molding apparatus is one wherein the periphery of the sheet material from which the cup is formed has a much greater biaxial orientation than heretofore possible, and therefore the resultant can body is much stronger than that previously feasible with the same material.     • In a vacuum-forming operation, four adjacent compartment liner sections are formed as an integral structure from a single sheet of thermoplastic material. Two pairs of adjacent molds, each having the desired shape of the inside surface of the corresponding liner section to be formed, are mounted along their base portions on frame structure hinged in regions of adjacency of the mold base portions, to provide for pivotation of the base portions so that confronting surfaces of the four molds are movable angularly toward and away from one another. A sheet of thermoplastic material disposed to extend over molds is heatsoftened, and then is ballooned upwardly while the molds are held in their pivoted positions, in which positions the confronting surfaces are substantially spaced from one another. A mold assist-plug and the pivoted molds are then moved, relative to one another, to urge the ballooned sheet into general close conformity with the molds. While the sheet of material is still soft, the mold frame structure is pivoted to cause adjacent wall portions of the molds to assume their closely spaced positions. Air entrapped between the heated sheet and the walls of the molds is then evacuated through a number of small ports, or vents, in the walls, thereby forming the desired integral liners, which are then cooled and stripped from the molds.
