    • A wire measuring and cutting apparatus 1 is provided with an U-turn guide section 6 which serves to guide a wire W being fed into a guide passage 5b for bending the wire W in a substantially U-shaped manner. In the section 6, a movable guide part 5 is constituted by a pair of guide pieces 5a, 5a which are pivoted so as to open and close together. The U-turn guide section 6 is provided with a displacement mechanism 8. The mechanism 8 can maintain the pair of guide pieces 5a, 5a in the closed position. While, the mechanism 8 can displace the guide pieces 5a, 5a for the opened position together with feeding inertia of the wire W in process of measuring the length of the wire W. With this structure, the guide pieces 5a, 5a can be opened at high speed due to the feeding inertia in addition to the driving force of the mechanism 8 to open the pieces 5a, 5a and there is no need to stop feeding the wire W during the measurement of the wire W.

    • An apparatus for penetrating a sheet material web being carried on a fabric. The apparatus including a penetrating device and an air flow that separates a portion of the sheet material web from the fabric adjacent the penetrating device so as to bring the web into contact with the penetrating device. In one embodiment, a vacuum lifts a portion of the sheet material web into contact with a slitting member such that it continuously slits the sheet material web longitudinally along its length as the fabric carries the sheet material web beneath it. In an alternative embodiment, a pressurized air stream is directed to a bottom portion of the sheet material web so as to separate the web from the fabric. A method for penetrating a sheet material web as it is carried on a fabric includes the steps of carrying the sheet material web on a fabric in a longitudinal direction, applying an air flow to the web so as to separate a portion of the web from the fabric, penetrating the web as it is separated from the fabric and reapplying the sheet material web to the fabric.

    • A wire cutting device (3) for cutting a wire electrode (5), used to generate an electric discharge between it and a workpiece (W), comprising a drive gear (12), a follower gear (13) which meshes with the drive gear and is shiftable in its axial direction relative to the drive gear, an adjustable bias mechanism (17) which presses the follower gear against the drive gear in order to accommodate wire electrode of various diameters, materials and conditions, take-up rollers (10a, 10b) which feed spent wire electrode between the drive gear and the follower gear, and a drive mechanism for driving the drive gear such that the peripheral speed of the drive gear is greater than the speed at which the wire electrode is fed out by the wire take up device. The wire electrode, pinched between the drive gear and the follower gear, is held in place between two adjacent teeth (13d, 13e) of either the drive gear or the follower gear, and the portion of the wire electrode which is held in place is pressed by the teeth (12e) of one gear into the teeth of the other gear, and is broken by means of tensile force. The pressing force of the biasing mechanism is adjustable by means of an adjustment screw (17e).

    • A process for the compression cutting of foam which uses a moving table which supports a template over which a foam block to be cut is placed. The foam block and template are moved under an angled moving belt compressed and passed against a moving blade. The improvement of the present invention includes the step of placing a second foam block above the foam block to be cut and passing both the foam block to be cut and the second block under the moving belt and cutting only the foam block to be cut. Next, the second foam block is removed and placed on top of the template and becomes a foam block to be cut and a new second foam block is placed over the block to be cut and the process is repeated. The template has a flat base with removable form members affixed to its upper surface. Then, when the template becomes worn, a new base board and sidewall can easily be formed and the removable form members removed from the worn form and placed on the upper surface of the base of the replacement template.
