    • An impact instrument for delivering an impulse to an object. The impact instrument may include an impact surface for contacting the object and an elongated member extending from the impact surface that terminates in an end. The elongated member may include a grasping region in the vicinity of the end. When the instrument is grasped within the grasping region, the center of percussion of the instrument preferably coincides with the impact surface. The instrument may also contain a pivoting grasping member disposed on the elongated member. A cavity is preferably formed between the grasping member and the elongated member and may contain compressible material. The grasping member may rigidly contact the elongated member at an ideal pivot point. The grasping member is preferably adapted to pivot with respect to the elongated member at the ideal pivot point. The pivoting of the grasping member preferably increases the amount of impulse delivered to an object, decreases vibration experienced by the user of the instrument, and reduces counter-rotational forces imparted from the instrument to the user. The impact instrument may be a hammer, ax, golf club, tennis racket, or similar device.

    • A hammer includes a composite material handle having a connecting portion formed on one end of the composite material handle. A head is encircled in the connecting portion of the handle and has a flat working face formed on one end. An annular groove is defined in a middle portion of the head to receive the connection portion of the handle. A through hole is transversely defined in the middle portion of the head and communicates with the annular groove. A cushion core is securely inserted in the through hole in the head to absorb the shock generated when the hammer is used.

    • A shock absorbing claw hammer consisting of a head with a striking face and a claw portion and having a chamber extending through the head. In a first embodiment, an inset step is formed at one end of the chamber to receive a cover plate and an aperture is formed at the opposite end to receive a handle. and The handle is affixed to the head with an epoxy base. The aperture is incompletely filled with shot and a cover plate is affixed to the head. The entire head assembly is cleaned and finished to produce a smooth finish. In a second embodiment, a hole is formed at the top of the chamber, which is sealed and finished after the shot is loaded in the chamber.

    • A manually operable impact tool that includes an elongated rigid interior handle structure extending longitudinally with respect to the tool, an impact head disposed at one longitudinal end portion of the handle structure and an exterior impact cushioning gripping structure affixed to a second longitudinal end portion of the elongated interior handle structure in surrounding relation thereto. The exterior impact cushioning gripping structure is formed of inner and outer layers of molded material. The inner layer is a foamed material that is selected from a group consisting of polyvinyl chloride, polypropylene, and thermoplastic elastomer and is molded in surrounding relation to the elongated interior handle structure. The outer layer is constructed of a solid nonfoamed material that is chemically compatible with the inner layer and is molded in surrounding abutting relation to the inner layer. The chemically compatible material used to form the outer layer is chosen from the same group of materials that is used to form the inner layer, viz., polyvinyl chloride, polypropylene, and thermoplastic elastomer. The outer layer is constructed and arranged to provide an inner surface on the outer layer that chemically compatibly bonds to an outside surface of the inner layer and to provide an exterior surface on the outer layer configured to accommodate a manually gripping hand. The arrangement of the gripping structure is such that when it is gripped by a user and the tool is manually operated to impact the tool head on a work piece, the inner layer of foamed material cushions the impact to the gripping hand of the user.
