    • A pin locking apparatus for use in a support fixture includes a locking plate having a pin receiving hole and a ball receiving hole, and a ball contained within the ball receiving hole. The bottom of the ball receiving hole merges with a lower portion of the pin receiving hole. In a locking position, the ball of the pin locking apparatus is positioned approximately at a bottom of the ball receiving hole, and in an unlocking position, the ball is remote from the bottom of the ball receiving hole. The pin locking plate may be included in individual pin locking modules, which may be added, rearranged or removed from a supporting device. The pin locking plate may also be included in a supporting device wherein the pins are locked and unlocked using vacuum and air pressure, and in a supporting device wherein the pins are locked and unlocked manually by twisting, lifting and lowering the pins.

    • A vacuum chuck is disclosed which has nipples as support structure and for vacuum delivery. In the preferred embodiment, two types of nipples are used: “plain” nipples which provide only support and vacuum nipples which provide support and deliver vacuum to retain the wafer on the chuck. The contact surface of the plain nipples is made smaller than that of the vacuum nipples. The chuck is secured to a stage using special supports which have limited flexibility in two axis with respect to the chuck, so as to prevent warping the chuck. Special vacuum nipples are disclosed which do not deliver vacuum unless the wafer exerts sufficient predetermined pressure on the nipple. The chuck is designed to hold both 200 mm and 300 mm wafers.

    • A workpiece holder assembly for vacuum-holding an aircraft wing skin or other workpiece for machining includes a base plate formed preferably of metal and adapted to be installed in a well area of a mill bed having vacuum passages therein, and an insert tool formed preferably of polymer material and adapted to be removably installed in a recess formed in the base plate. The base plate and insert tool have vacuum holes extending therethrough for communication with the vacuum passages in the mill bed. The surface of the insert tool facing away from the base plate includes one or more seal strips retained in grooves for sealing against a surface of a wing skin or other workpiece, and also includes one or more depressed regions for accommodating one or more protruding features that project from the workpiece surface, such as padups, steps, or taper planes on the inboard end of a wing skin panel. A plurality of insert tools having different configurations adapted to accommodate different workpiece configurations are interchangeably installable in the recess of a single common base plate. The tooling is converted to a different configuration for machining a different workpiece configuration by removing the existing insert tool from the base plate and installing a new insert tool. The invention facilitates manual conversion of the tooling by virtue of the removable insert tools, which can be made light enough in weight to be readily installed and removed by a worker without the use of cranes or other heavy equipment.

    • A platform and method for leveling the upper surface of a printed circuit board placed upon a work table. The platform comprises a substantially flat plate, the plate having a fastener for planerly securing the printed circuit board thereto, and at least one support having a length between a first end and a second end, the second end of the at least one support attached to the plate, and wherein the length of the at least one support is selected such that an angle between the plate and the work table compensates for any angular displacement of the printed circuit board relative to the plate. The method comprises fastening the printed circuit board to a platform, securing the platform to the work table, and angularly adjusting the upper surface of the printed circuit board by altering an angle between the platform and the work table.

    • A work piece holding apparatus uses a magnetorheological fluid for holding a work piece firmly for machining process and/or measurements. The apparatus includes a cell with a hollow space in it and magnetorheological fluid is put into the hollow space. A special fixture with a hollow space in it is used to hold a work piece by screws in the wall or walls. The fixture with a work piece in it is fastened inside the cell dipped in magnetorheological fluid to absorb the extra force beyond the holding power supplied by magnetorheological fluid alone. It then overcomes any climbing that may happen during any process. A magnetic field is supplied to the cell to make the magnetorheological fluid work. It is well known that if a magnetic field is applied to a magnetorheological fluid, the viscosity of the fluid will be increased tremendously and behaves almost like a solid. A pressure applied in this apparatus to the magnetorheological fluid while the magnetic field is “on” will increase the viscosity of a magnetorheological fluid many times. The pressurized magnetorheological fluid supplies a large average pressure (holding force) to a work piece, and the special fixture mentioned then absorbs the overshoot caused by the machining process and/or performing measurements. This invention makes the magnetorheological fluid enter practical industrial applications especially in fixture apparatus applications.
