    • A method for fabricating an induction motor rotor lamination includes using an indexed notching die to punch a plurality of closed rotor slots at different distances from a center point of rotation by punching a first rotor slot, changing the position of a center point of the rotor lamination with respect to the notching die, and punching a second rotor slot. In another embodiment, a plurality of rotor slit patterns are punched using a variable depth indexed notching die including at least two rotor slit punching portions, one being deeper than another, by punching a first rotor slit pattern, changing the depth of closure of the notching die, and punching a second rotor slit pattern with the second rotor slit pattern having a different number of rotor slits than the first. In another embodiment, each rotor slit is open to and off center with respect to its respective rotor slot, and rotor laminations are stacked by positioning some of the rotor laminations in an orientation with is turned over and rotated with respect to others of the rotor laminations; filling the rotor slots and the rotor slits with cage material; and machining outer surfaces of the rotor laminations. In another embodiment, uniformly spaced identical rotor slots are punched and modulation is created by punching a contoured outside diameter or by inserting slot wedges of molded magnetic material.

    • A process and apparatus for manufacturing lamina stacks used to form rotor or stator cores for electric motors. In the process of forming a plurality of blanked lamina, a blanking and tacking machine forms dimples in the laminas prior to coaxially stacking the laminas. The lamina may also include interlocking portions so that the lamina stack may be interlocked. The dimples are located at offset positions relative to adjacent laminas to cause the laminas of the stack to be spaced apart. The spaced apart stack may be subject to annealing which relieves metal stress in the stack and causes the formation of a desired non-conductive layer on the surfaces of the laminas. The annealed lamina stack may then be compressed to bring the laminas into abutting relation to be subsequently manufactured into rotor or stator cores.

    • Elongated thin strip stock is blanked to form interlocking laminas for electric motor or generator rotors or stators at successive blanking stations. At a final assembly station the laminas are stacked and pressed into interlocking relationship. In response to an operator input a predetermined number of reversals, or half turns about the stack axis of the previously stacked lamina are provided in order to compensate for nonuniform strip thickness to obtain a rotor or stator of substantially uniform height. Alternatively the thickness of the strip stock is gauged at transversely spaced points on the strip to determine cross feed thickness variation in the strip whereupon the stacked laminas are automatically provided with a number of reversals about the stack axis in response to a thickness differential that would result in a parallelism error in the stack that exceeds a predetermined amount. Rotor conductor slots are formed in the stacked laminas and are skewed to the stack axis by providing arcuate indexing of each lamina relative to the next preceding lamina in the stack by an arcuate increment that is automatically determined in response to operator entered inputs relative to the stack height, the skew angle, nominal lamina thickness and skew direction.

    • A notching tool for forming notches in ridge- or hip-capping for roofs, the notches being formed to match the profile of the roofing sheets.The tool has a base with a pair of spaced feet which engage the ribs on the roofing sheets to align the tool. A notching head on the base has a replaceable die and punch pair, one of which is fixed to support the capping while the other is manually or power-operated to provide a shearing-type cutting action between the die and punch to cut the notches. Adjustable guides on the notching head support the capping for angular alignment between the capping and the notching head and for adjustment of the depth of the notch.
