    • A concise method to promote growth of a plant useful for increase of food production. This invention provides a method to promote growth of a plant by administration of formic acid, an organic acid with a low molecular weight through avoidance of photo-oxidation damage. This invention also provides amino acid sequence of formate dehydrogenase and base sequence encoding the enzyme. The expression of the enzyme is induced by administration of formic acid and the enzyme is involved in metabolism of formic acid and its salts. Furthermore, this invention provides a method to promote growth of a plant by administration of methanol through avoidance of photo-oxidation damage.

    • The present invention provides a novel method for the preparation of a unique profile of primary aliphatic alcohols, having 24 to 30 carbon atoms, from the wax secreted by the insect Ericerus pela. Included in the present invention is the composition of matter, referred to herein as “polycosanol” produced by the method of this invention. The polycosanol composition is comprised primarily of the four primary aliphatic alcohols, tetracosanol, hexacosanol, octacosanol and triacontanol. Further included in this invention is the use of said composition of matter for the prevention and treatment of obesity, syndrome X, diabetes, hypercholesterolemia, atherosclerotic complications, ischemia and thrombosis.

    • The present invention provides an ophthalmic composition for soft contact lenses (SCL), which contains a terpenoid as an active ingredient, an ophthalmic composition for SCL, which contains polyoxyethylene sorbitan ester, a method of enhancing the wettability of soft contact lenses, which comprises bringing terpenoid into contact with SCL and a method of inhibiting adsorption of terpenoid onto SCL, which comprises adding polyoxyethylene sorbitan ester to an ophthalmic composition containing a terpenoid. The ophthalmic composition containing a terpenoid improves, for example, the wettability of SCL, thereby to inhibit decrease in the water content of SCL. As a result, it can inhibit a dry feeling and an uncomfortable feeling during wearing SCL and is useful for enhancing the wettability of SCL. Further, addition of polyoxyethylene sorbitan ester leads to the inhibition of adsorption of terpenoid onto SCL.
