    • A weed killing apparatus comprises an application head at one end of the apparatus and a handle at another end of the apparatus by which a user standing on the ground may move the application head over a weed or weeds in the ground. The application head is heated and has at least one steam outlet in or adjacent the application head. Steam producing means is arranged to produce steam and is controllable by the user to direct steam from the steam outlets when the application head is placed over a weed or weeds, so that the weed(s) is/are killed by a combination of heat from the application head and steam. A method of killing or controlling weeds comprises applying the heated application head over the weed(s) to heat the weed(s) through direct physical contact or radiant heating from the application head while simultaneously directing stem from the application head on to the weed(s).

    • A method for enhancing the winter-spring quality of turfgrass by application of a composition containing a sand that has been colored with a dark colorant. The color is typically a dark green or black and can be prepared by mixing a latex paint with a white sand. The darkened sand absorbs radiant sunlight and raises the temperature of the turfgrass thus hastening growth and spring greening. The method is especially useful for golf course putting greens and a preferred application is to apply the composition in the fall prior to snow or ice accumulation. Such use on golf course putting greens will cause the turf to break dormancy and grow earlier than normal in the spring thus enhancing the quality and enjoyment of early spring playing.

    • Plant potting machines and methods have synchronized continuous motion pot track and soil drilling systems. In especially preferred forms, potting machines and methods of forming a planting recess in soil contained within a pot are provided which move a soil-filled pot continuously along a linear segment of a pot track, and move a drill bit continuously in synchronized registry with the soil-filled pot at the same time as the pot moves continuously along the linear segment of the pot track. Most preferably, simultaneous horizontal and vertical motion components are imparted to a soil-drilling drill bit relative to the linear segment of the pot track, for example, by moving the drill bit in an arcuate (preferably circular) orbit above the pot track. Such simultaneous horizontal and vertical motion components cause the drill bit to track linearly in registry with the pot conveyed by the pot track along the linear segment thereof and to be moved vertically into and out of contact with soil contained within the pot to thereby drill the planting recess therein.
