    • This invention relates to a locking device having a latching element movable between a locking position and an inoperative position, operating means for moving the latching element, a blocking member movable to a blocking position for mechanically preventing the latching element from moving to its inoperative position. According to the invention, a plurality of thermally responsive elements are arranged or are individually bendable to form thermally responsive holding means for adopting a holding condition to temporarily hold the blocking member in the blocking position and, preferably, also to form thermally responsive safety means for normally adopting an inoperative condition. Thermo-electric means are associated with the thermally responsive means for individually and selectively heating the thermally responsive means to move the thermally responsive holding means from the holding condition thereby permitting the blocking member to move from the blocking position and for moving the thermally responsive safety means to a holding condition for holding the blocking member in the blocking position. Thus, the blocking member is permitted to move from said blocking position only on correctly energizing said thermo-electric means. Actuating means are provided for enabling said thermo-electric means to be selectively energized.

    • An oven door lock for self-cleaning ovens is described. The oven door lock includes a manually operated latch mechanism moveable from an unlatched state. In the latched state, a thermally responsive element is provided with a pin adapted to be received in a hole defined in the latch mechanism to lock the latch mechanism in the latched state during self-cleaning operation. The oven door lock is provided with a nuisance latch which prevents the latch mechanism from being moved to the latched state during non-self-cleaning use of the oven. A switch is provided to indicate when the latch mechanism is in the latched state. An insulation pad is sandwiched between the switch and a mounting bracket of the oven door lock to thermally and electrically insulate the switch from the oven door lock.

    • A product monitoring device including a releasable locking device adapted to be secured to a product and actuatable between locked and unlocked positions. The locking device consists of a pair of movable members, one of which mounts a bimetallic member consisting of bimetal elements having different temperature coefficients of expansion, the bimetal elements being separated by an insulator. The locking device includes a detent cooperatively associated with the bimetallic member to maintain the members in a locked position. The device uses an electrifiable key for heating the bimetallic elements to effect displacement thereof relative to the detent to facilitate movement of the members to an unlocked position. The device incorporates structural features which increase strength in operation, and further serve to make unauthorized opening and/or breakage of portions, with the intent of permitting separation from an article to which attached, more difficult. Opening without use of the key is additionally more difficult in the improved device.
