    • A lock striker plate. A first portion attaches to a doorjamb, over a bolt-receiving blind bore therein. A second portion extends perpendicularly forwardly from the first portion, contacts, and extends forwardly past, a stop of the doorjamb, and blocks insertion of a thin card into the bolt-receiving blind bore therein. A third portion extends perpendicularly sidewardly from the second portion, after the stop of the doorjamb and attaches thereto. In one embodiment, the third portion extends forwardly of the first portion so as to lie in a plane parallel to that of the first portion when the stop of the doorjamb is not a separate piece therefrom. In another embodiment, the third portion lies in a same plane as that of the first portion when the stop of the doorjamb is a separate piece therefrom.

    • A latch assembly is operable to catch automatically and is releasable by hand. A component frame defines a clearance hole and a stop. A latch, also with a clearance hole, is mounted to the frame so that the clearance holes overlap. The latch is biased against the stop but is capable of pivoting away from the stop responsive to hand-applied pressure. A peg having a groove underneath a sloping top is mounted to a chassis or other surface against which the component frame is to be retained. As the component frame is lowered over the peg, an edge of the latch contacts the top of the peg, causing the latch to pivot so that the frame may be lowered into place. When the frame is in place, the latch pivots back and snaps into the groove.

    • A latch assembly comprising a latch mechanism and latch housing wherein the latch assembly is useful for containers such as coolers in which it is desired that the cooler lid be secured to the container to keep the contents in the cooler while allowing the cooler lid to be opened and closed without having to change the position of the latch mechanism securing the cooler lid to the body of the cooler. The latch mechanism is mounted to the body of the cooler. The latch housing is mounted to the cooler lid and comprises a receptacle member and a clip which applies pressure to the receptacle member. The latch housing is designed to fit the latch hook and to automatically align the latch hook as it is rotated into the latch housing. The latch housing may also be part of the cooler lid handle used for gripping the cooler lid when opening or closing the lid.

    • An electric door opening mechanism is disclosed which is operable in either a fail safe and a fail secure mode. The electric door opening mechanism comprises a housing having a cutout portion with an opening adapted to receive a bolt of a door. At least one keeper arm is pivotally mounted to the housing. The keeper arm has a locked position occluding the opening and an open position which allows the bolt to be inserted and withdrawn from the opening. A transmission lever pivotally mounted to the housing releasably engages each keeper arm. When the keeper arm and the transmission lever are engaged, the transmission lever holds the keeper arm in the locked position. A release lever pivotally mounted to the housing is adapted to engage the transmission lever. The release lever has three positions, a first unlocked position, a second locked position and a third unlocked position. When the release lever is in the locked position, it holds the transmission lever in engagement with the keeper arm. The device has a source of electrical power which is used to move the release lever between positions. The device also permits the user to select either a fail safe or a fail secure mode in which the release lever is either in the first unlocked position or the locked position when the source of electrical power is disconnected.

    • A latch unit of the invention includes a casing having a holding chamber for holding a striker and a side chamber situated adjacent to the holding chamber, and a responding member housed in the side chamber. The holding chamber and the side chamber are partitioned by an elastic member projecting toward an introduction opening of the holding chamber for introducing the striker to be attached to the latch unit. The electric member is provided with an engaging projection for engaging the striker as the striker is inserted into the holding chamber. The side chamber is provided with an urging device for urging the responding member toward a base portion of the elastic member. An urging force of the urging device is set such that when an inertia force is applied to release an engagement of the elastic member and the striker to thereby extract the striker from the holding chamber, the responding member is allowed to move to a position for preventing the elastic member from being bent toward the side chamber. Thus, engagement of the latch and the striker is not released in case of emergency.

    • A vehicle door striker is manufactured from a U-shaped striker plate and a striker bolt. The striker plate has a mounting plate connected to an arm by a support segment. The mounting plate has a striker bolt hole and two mounting bolt holes therethrough and the arm has a boss with a threaded hole therethrough. The striker bolt has a head and a threaded end with a shaft therebetween. The shaft is surrounded by a profiled plastic sleeve which serves to dampen sound and reduce wear. In assembling the vehicle door striker, the striker bolt is inserted through the striker bolt hole such that the head is fully recessed in the mounting plate and such that the threaded end is threaded into the threaded hole of the boss. The striker bolt and threaded hole interface in an interference fit designed to maximize the failure point of the connection. The sleeve may be placed over the shaft of the striker bolt either before or during the assembly process. A plastic cover substantially envelops the striker plate to provide sound dampening and to further protect the vehicle door striker. A mounting bolt captivation feature may be provided to facilitate installation on a vehicle door frame. A mounting bolt capitivation feature maybe provided to facilitate installation on a vehicle door frame by retaining the mounting bolts in the mounting bolt holes prior to installation. The mounting bolt captivation feature incorporates the use of a compressible captivation ring disposed about the shaft of each mounting bolt after the mounting bolt is inserted through a mounting bolt hole.

    • A power striker mechanism (10) has a housing (22). A striker (18) is mounted on a striker plate (20) that is mounted on the housing for sliding movement between an inboard and an outboard position. A driver plate (44) is mounted to the housing for sliding movement in a direction orthogonal to the movement of the striker plate (20). An actuator (16) effects movement of the driver plate (44) to thereby effect movement of the striker plate (20) between the inboard and outboard positions. The striker plate (20) has a pin (36) and the driver plate has an S-shaped slot (42). The pin slidably engages the S-shaped slot. The S-shaped slot has end regions extending generally parallel to each other and in the orthogonal direction and is interconnected by a diagonally extending section. When the pin (36) is in the end regions of the S-shaped slot, forces imparted on the striker plate (20) are transmitted to the housing (22) and thereby preventing backlash of the actuator (16). When the pin (36) is in the diagonally extending section, movement of the drive plate (44) effects movement of the striker plate (20).
