    • Disclosed is an emulsion useful in an inversion process. The emulsion is a water-in-oil emulsion and has an aqueous phase having a water-soluble polymer, an oil phase and an activating agent of the following formula: wherein n=0 to 10 and m=2 to 25 and the oxypropylene and oxyethylene units are of block distribution or intermixed in random or tapered distribution. Further disclosed is a process according to the following: a) providing an water-in-oil emulsion having a water-soluble polymer in the aqueous phase and the activating agent; b) introducing the emulsion into an aqueous medium and c) allowing sufficient time for the emulsion to invert. Further disclosed is another process according to the following: a) providing an water-in-oil emulsion having a water-soluble polymer in the aqueous phase; b) introducing the emulsion into an aqueous medium having the activating agent and c) allowing sufficient time for the emulsion to invert.

    • The invention concerns a method for treatment of solid and fluid materials contaminated by at least predominantly lipophilic harmful substances, in particular hydrocarbons and the like, especially for oil-infested grounds and waters, as well as suitable systems and emulsifier substances for carrying out the method. The contaminated materials, for microdispersed emulsifying of the harmful substances, is intimately mixed with at least one emulsifying substance as well as possibly with water. Subsequently, the emulsion is separated from the material while adding water, and preferentially biologically decomposed. The treatment is conducted with an emulsifying composition containing biologically decomposable organic compounds including a member with emulsification (causing lipophilic and hydrophilic functional groups) a fatty alcohol polyglycol ether-type tenside member and a member having one or more functional groups recognizable by bacterial cell membranes as being absorbable.

    • A polyether polycarbonate block copolymer nonionic surface-active agent and method for making the same. The polyether polycarbonate surface active agent is comprised of a hydrophilic portion comprised of a polymer selected from the group consisting of a polyoxyalkylene polyether, a saccharide, a saccharide polyoxyalkylenate, a polycarbonate having a carbon dioxide content of from about 1 to 15 molar percent and mixtures thereof and a hydrophobic portion comprising alkylene and carbonate units arranged in alternating or random order to form a poly(alkylene carbonate) having a total carbon dioxide content of from about 25 to 50 molar percent and a total molecular weight of from about 300 to 10,000. The hydrophobic portion is bonded to the hydrophilic portion at each side of a reactive hydrogen. The surface active agent is prepared by polymerizing the hydrophilic portion with the hydrophobic portion in a weight ratio of about 10:90 to 90:10.
