    • A method and apparatus for casting a molten material using a phase-change material. A funnel means is provided that includes a reservoir containing a phase-change material. The funnel means is used in conjunction with a mold. The phase-change material is heated to a temperature above its melting point. A molten material is poured into the mold, and an excess amount of the molten material is retained in the funnel means after the mold is filled. The latent heat of fusion of the phase-change material provides heat to the funnel means as the phase-change material changes from a liquid to a solid. The heat from the phase-change material maintains the temperature of the molten material within the funnel above its melting point as the molten material within the mold begins to solidify and contract, thereby permitting the excess material within the funnel means to feed into the mold and fill any voids or porosities formed by the contraction of the material within the mold. The funnel means may also include a neck-engaging portion in thermal contact with the phase-change material for engaging an upper, or neck, portion of the mold to maintain molten material contained within that portion above its melting temperature for an extended period of time. The apparatus and method are particularly well suited for use in casting explosive projectile shells.

    • This transfer nozzle consists of a nozzle body with a disk type cylindrical center part (21) and two axial nozzle cones (22,23). On a part of their height the nozzle cones (22, 23) are embraced by a sleeve-like collar (25, 26) and within the collars there are several axial passage openings (27, 28). A radial passage opening (30) through the center part (21) serves to receive a heating cartridge. The nozzle body (21, 22, 23) is supported by means of the outermost portions of the two collars (25, 26) on the one hand in the supporting basket (2) and on the other hand in the tool part (5), so that little heat can be lost to the cooled machine parts. The nozzle cavity (11) forms an air cushion around the center part (21) which also has a heat-insulating effect. Such a transfer nozzle has a low structural height and can keep the molding material warm from within, and by the axial arrangement of two nozzle cones the material is ejected with each molding.

    • A clamp for clamping heater assemblies onto cylindrical bodies such as injection molding nozzles that require heating. The clamp includes a mandrel that slips over the nozzle, and has a heater wound on the exterior. The mandrel has a longitudinal slit that will permit the bore of the mandrel to be reduced in size when a lateral width of the slit is reduced. The mandrel carries outwardly facing cam surfaces, and an overlying sleeve has inwardly facing cam surfaces which mate, and upon relative longitudinal movement, the cam surfaces cause the lateral width of the slit to reduce and clamp the mandrel onto the nozzle. The clamping can be effected by differential movement due to differences in thermal expansion of the mandrel and the sleeve, or by mechanical movement of the sleeve relative to the mandrel to obtain the cam action.

    • An apparatus for compacting a solid waste material includes a hollow cylindrical body having a charging inlet for charging the solid waste material therethrough into the hollow cylindrical body, a heating portion for heating the solid waste material in the hollow cylindrical body, and a discharging outlet for discharging the solid waste material from the hollow cylindrical body; a rotatable shaft disposed in the hollow cylindrical body and having a helical screw blade thereon, the screw blade and an inner wall surface of the hollow cylindrical body being spaced from each other with a clearance provided therebetween for allowing the solid waste material in the hollow cylindrical body to form a bridge therein; a support for radially movably supporting an end of the rotatable shaft; a prime mover coupled to the end of the rotatable shaft through the support; and an outlet nozzle coupled to the discharging outlet for compressing the solid waste material discharged from the discharging outlet. The compacting apparatus can compact various solid waste materials including plastics discharged from homes, factories, nuclear power plants, and other facilities, and compacted solid waste materials can be solidified into solid masses or pelletized.

    • A pellet mill includes a conditioning section which mixes dry material, moisture in the form of water, and heat provided by a hot air system for the creation of a mash suitable for pelleting without the use of steam. The hot air section inputs heat by utilizing a blower which pressurizes air across a heat exchanger and into a plenum which interconnects an air duct with the conditioner. Moisture is input to the conditioner with a hot water system which modulates the flow of water and temperature of the water as it is sprayed onto the dry material. An automatic controller controls the process in accordance with temperature measurements made at various points in the pellet mill to select a desired operating temperature or in accordance with other control parameters previously developed.
