    • A d.c.-to-a.c. power converter for supplying low voltage a.c. current to a load circuit that incorporates a low voltage incandescent lamp in an automobile. The converter circuit includes first and second switches 16, 18 serially connected between a bus conductor 28 and a reference conductor 30; being connected together at a common node 42 through which the a.c. current flows and having a shared control node 38. A series circuit including capacitor 60, inductor 58 and inductor 56 is connected between common node 42 and control node 38. The voltage between the control node 38 and the common node 42 determines the conduction state of the associated switch. First and second resistors 70, 72 are serially connected between the bus and reference conductors, with their intermediate node connected to the control node. A third resistor 74 is connected between the common node and one of the bus conductor and the reference conductor. An autotransformer has one end connected to the common node. A capacitor 68 is connected between the reference conductor and the remaining end of the autotransformer. A power converter controller 90, is in operational connection with the power converter circuit 10 to control operation of the power converter when changes in the bus voltage occur.

    • A power converter with an enhanced power conversion factor interfaces with electrical utility alternating current (AC) power sources to drive low voltage electrical loads. A high frequency drive signal is provided by an oscillating power driver stage. Enhanced power conversion efficiencies are achieved using an uninterrupted wave operation of the high frequency oscillating power driver stage used to effect power conversion. Components of the power converter are protected by suppressing the oscillation of the oscillating power driver stage for as long as electrical fault conditions persist. The advantages include power savings, an extended life of power converter components, reduced heat output and reduced stress on power converter components during electrical faults.

    • A lighting system (100) comprises a nonconductive niche (110) that is free of ground connections and bond connections, and a lighting fixture (108) having no conductive components, except for a current-carrying circuit (112). Snap fasteners (124) secure the lighting fixture to the niche, and lamp sockets are arranged to radiate multiple light beams from halogen lamps in different directions. An electronic isolation transformer (200), which supplies a two-wire, ungrounded source of power to the halogen lamps, presents a linear load and a conduction path to a dimmer switch, and inhibits switching in the electronic isolation transformer when an AC signal (204) applied to the electronic isolation transformer is within a predetermined range. A nonconductive junction box (600) houses the electronic isolation transformer and physically isolates a high-voltage, low-frequency power source (106) from the low-voltage, high-frequency power source in the junction box.

    • An inverter is adapted to be powered from full-wave-rectified unfiltered 60 Hz power line voltage and to provide an amplitude-modulated output of relatively high-frequency voltage. The inverter has to be triggered into oscillation. However, once triggered, it will continue to oscillate--but only for as long as its DC supply voltage is present.Since the DC supply voltage falls to zero magnitude once for each half-cycle of the 60 Hz power line voltage, the inverter stops oscillating after each such half-cycle; and therefore, for as long as output voltage is desired, the inverter has to be re-triggered after each half-cycle.Triggering is accomplished by a Diac in combination with an RC integrating circuit; which means that the inverter is triggered into oscillation some time period after the onset of each half-cycle. The length of this time period is determined by the nature of the RC integrating circuit, in the same way as phase-control is accomplished in an ordinary Triac-type incandescent lamp dimmer.By varying the time-constant of the RC integrating circuit, the inverter can be triggered into oscillation with varying amounts of delay; which means that the net effective RMS magnitude of the output voltage can be adjusted by adjusting the time-constant of the RC integrating circuit.
