    • In a power-line-operated high-frequency electronic ballast, a half-bridge inverter is powered from a DC supply voltage and a fluorescent lamp is connected with the inverter's more-or-less asymmetrical squarewave output voltage by way of a of a series-resonant L-C circuit. The amount of power supplied by the inverter to the series-resonant L-C circuit and/or to the fluorescent lamp at any given moment depends on four significant factors: (i) the instantaneous magnitude of the DC supply voltage, (ii) the instantaneous frequency of the inverter's squarewave output voltage, (iii) the symmetry of the inverter's squarewave output voltage (which determines the effective magnitude of of its fundamental frequency voltage component), and (iv) the instantaneous operational characteristics of the fluorescent lamp. Arrangements are provided whereby the symmetry, and thereby the effective magnitude, of the inverter's output voltage is automatically adjusted so as to prevent inverter overload in case the fluorescent lamp is non-present or inoperative. The half-bridge inverter includes a bipolar transistor series-connected with a FET. The bipolar transistor operates with a substantially constant per-cycle ON-time, whereas the FET operates with a per-cycle ON-time of controllable duration.

    • A lighting system for a suspended ceiling comprises a plurality of power conditioning units permanently wired-in with the 120 Volt/60 Hz power line and mounted in various suitable locations on the permanent ceiling above the suspended ceiling. Each power conditioning unit conditionally provides a voltage at each of several multi-connector power output ports. Each power output port is operable: (i) to connect with a special lighting fixture by way of a light-weight flexible disconnectable connect cord; and (ii) on receipt of a special signal from the lighting fixture, to power the lamp(s) therein. Plural such special lighting fixtures are mounted in the suspended ceiling, with each lighting fixture being connected with and powered from one of the power output ports of a power conditioning unit mounted somewhere nearby on the permanent ceiling above. Due to the manifestly power-limited nature of the output of each of the power output ports, as combined with the light-weight flexible and detachable nature of the connect cords, each special lighting fixture may be made without the usual concerns with respect to fire-initiation safety and may be treated as a plug-in portable lighting product; which implies particularly low cost and a high degree of flexibility in installation and use.

    • A self-contained programmable wall switch actuator/timer unit can easily be mounted directly onto the outside of the face plate of a standard wall switch. This actuator/timer unit can be programmed to operate the lever of the wall switch in accordance with a program that automatically repeats on a diurnal, weekly or other cyclical basis. It comprises a small battery, a miniature electric motor with a gear/linkage mechanism operable to engage with and to move the switch lever between its OFF and ON positions, and a quartz-clock-based programming means having programming intput keys and time display means. Once programmed by way of the programming input keys, the programming means is operative to actuate the electric motor in such manner as to move the switch lever into its ON and/or OFF position in accordance with the keyed-in program.     • A fluorescent lighting system has: (A) a central power supply connected with regular power line voltage and including a number of power supply modules (e.g., eight), each such module having: (i) a parallel-resonant self-oscillating bridge inverter operative to provide a 35 kHz sinusoidal output voltage at a pair of primary output terminals; (ii) a tank-inductor and a tank-capacitor parallel-connected across the primary output terminals; and (iii) several (e.g., four) pairs of secondary output terminals, each connected with the primary output terminals via its own dedicated current-limiting sub-circuit; thereby to prevent a load connected with a pair of secondary output terminals from drawing more than a certain amount of power; thereby, in turn, to render each pair of secondary output terminals fire-hazard-safe; (B) a plurality of lighting fixtures (e.g., 32), each having a fluorescent lamp and a power input receptacle; each lighting fixture also including a power-factor-corrected 35 Khz ballast connected between its power input receptacle and its fluorescent lamp; and (C) a light-weight power cord plug-in-connected between the power input receptacle of each lighting fixture and one of the pairs of power output terminals. Thus, a single central multi-port power supply will serve to power a large number (e.g., 32) lighting fixtures, with each individual lighting fixture connected directly with one of the many (e.g., 32) individual pairs of secondary power output terminals of the central power supply.

    • A compact folded fluorescent lamp and a small incandescent lamp are both mounted on an ordinary Edison-type screw-base capable of being screwed into an ordinary lamp socket at which ordinary AC power line voltage is controllably provided. An inverter-type ballast is integrally combined with the base and is operable to power the fluorescent lamp whenever the base is indeed screwed into the lamp socket. The incandescent lamp is powered from the AC power line voltage by way of an SCR whose conduction angle is controlled such as to cause the total light provided from the combination fluorescent-incandescent lamp to remain substantially constant from the very first moment that AC power line voltage is provided at the lamp socket. Thus, when the AC power line voltage is initially provided, the light provided from the incandescent lamp will be at its maximum while the light provided from the fluorescent lamp will be at its minimum. Thereafter, the light from the incandescent lamp will gradually diminish as the light from the fluorescent lamp gradually increases. After a brief period, the AC power line voltage will be totally disconnected from the incandescent lamp.

    • In an electronic ballast, a half-bridge inverter drives a series-connected LC circuit near the LC circuit's natural resonance frequency. A relatively high-magnitude substantially sinusoidal 30 kHz output voltage develops across the tank-capacitor of the LC circuit. Each of several instant-start fluorescent lamps is series-connected with a current-limiting capacitor, thereby resulting in several lamp-capacitor series-combinations, each of which is connected across the tank-capacitor. The ballast is powered from ordinary 120 Volt/60 Hz power line voltage by way of a full-wave rectifier. At the DC output terminals of this rectifier exists a DC voltage having an instantaneous absolute magnitude equal to that of the power line voltage. Within the ballast, the inverter is powered from a DC supply voltage of constant magnitude about equal to the peak magnitude of the power line voltage. By interposing power-drawing circuitry in series with each lamp-capacitor combination, an auxiliary DC voltage is developed across a pair of auxiliary DC terminals. When no current flows from the auxiliary DC terminals, the magnitude of the auxiliary DC voltage is equal to that of the DC supply voltage. The maximum DC current available from the auxiliary DC terminals varies with the magnitude of the combined lamp currents and is adjusted so as to be equal to the peak magnitude of the current drawn from the power line; which current, as a result, is nearly sinusoidal.

    • A current-fed parallel-resonant self-oscillating electronic ballast includes four special switching devices, each serving the function of a single switching transistor in a full-bridge inverter. Each special switching device includes two series-connected field effect transistors synchronously gated via positive feedback of a sinusoidal output voltage. The reason for using two series-connected field-effect transistors in lieu of a single field-effect transistor of higher voltage rating relates to the fact that, for the DC supply voltages associated with certain electronic ballast circuits powered from commonly encountered power line voltages, field-effect transistors of lower voltage ratings (e.g., 400 Volt) are substantially lower in cost per-unit Volt-Ampere rating as compared with field-effect transistors of higher voltage ratings (e.g., 800 Volt). Thus, although such higher-voltage transistors are readily available, the net overall ballast cost will nevertheless be significantly reduced by using the special switching devices.

    • A flashlight has a hybrid battery pack consisting of a primary-cell battery (ex: an Alkaline battery) and an auxiliary rechargeable battery of low internal resistance (ex: a Ni--Cad battery). Connected in circuit between the batteries and the flashlight's light bulb is a slide switch and an electronic control circuit. The slide switch has an OFF-position, an ON-position, and a spring-loaded variable BOOST-position. In full BOOST, the electronic control circuit operates such as to apply a voltage of about 1.5 times normal magnitude to the light bulb; thereby increasing the flashlight's light output by a factor of about 4.0 above normal. However, at that degree of BOOST, if indeed maintained on a continuous basis, the life of the light bulb will be shortened to about 15 minutes versus about 50 hours when used in the normal ON-position. The function of the auxiliary battery, which is controllably charged by the primary-cell battery, is that of permitting the size of the primary-cell battery to be much smaller than otherwise would be required to provide the increased power associated with the BOOST-position.

    • A plug-in timer has a set of input terminals and a set of output terminals as well as a contactor operable to make and/or break electrical connection between these sets of terminals in accordance with a pre-setable 24 hour program. The timer is powered from a small built-in battery, and comprises its own quartz clock and programming-and-control means. The contactor is actuated by a miniature DC motor through a gear and cam arrangement. The operation of the DC motor is controlled by the programming-and-control means, which provides power from the battery to the motor in accordance with a pre-set program; which pre-set program may be modified at any time by way of a keyboard and a numeric display means. The contactor operates by way of hard metal contacts and very little power dissipation occurs within the timer. The timer can be plugged into a special wall switch receptacle and then operates to programmably control the flow of power to the load controlled by this wall switch. Since the timer has its own built-in source of energy and clock, its operation is totally independent of the power line, and it will therefore not be affected by a power failure. With a usage rate of two CONNECT-actuations and two DISCONNECT-actuations per day, plus occasional over-rides, the battery will last for years before needing replacement.
