    • A d.c.-to-a.c. power converter for supplying low voltage a.c. current to a load circuit that incorporates a low voltage incandescent lamp in an automobile. The converter circuit includes first and second switches 16, 18 serially connected between a bus conductor 28 and a reference conductor 30; being connected together at a common node 42 through which the a.c. current flows and having a shared control node 38. A series circuit including capacitor 60, inductor 58 and inductor 56 is connected between common node 42 and control node 38. The voltage between the control node 38 and the common node 42 determines the conduction state of the associated switch. First and second resistors 70, 72 are serially connected between the bus and reference conductors, with their intermediate node connected to the control node. A third resistor 74 is connected between the common node and one of the bus conductor and the reference conductor. An autotransformer has one end connected to the common node. A capacitor 68 is connected between the reference conductor and the remaining end of the autotransformer. A power converter controller 90, is in operational connection with the power converter circuit 10 to control operation of the power converter when changes in the bus voltage occur.

    • An apparatus and method for delivering power from a D.C. voltage source to one or more D.C. loads rated at lower voltages. The invention provides for the repetitive application of the higher D.C. voltage to the loads for a predetermined time period sufficient for the load to operate yet not too long to ensure that the load will not be damaged. To implement the invention, a clock signal provides the time reference for separate slots allocated for the time periods associated with each of the loads. A user selectively enables or interrupts the repetitive connection to each of one of the loads. The rate of repetition of the connection of the high voltage source could vary from 60 to 200 Hertz, preferably without degrading the operation of typical loads.

    • A system for detecting overheat of an internal combustion engine for an outboard motor. In the system,when an elapsed time since engine staring is within a predetermined time, a detected engine temperature is equal to or greater than a first predetermined temperature and an detected engine speed exceeds an idling speed; a threshold value (compared with the detected engine temperature to determine the engine overheating) is changed to be increased. With this, even if the detected engine temperature is higher than a true or actual temperature at, for example, a high engine load immediately after engine starting or when the engine has been left in the idling state, the system can prevent it from being determined unnecessarily as the overheated condition.
