    • There is provided a video cassette recorder comprising a delay element (1), a switching unit (2) for switching an output of the delay element (1), a logic unit (3) for controlling the switching unit (2), and a skew detection unit (4) for detecting a skew, wherein the delay element (1) shares a delay element used for vertical emphasis/vertical de-emphasis and for a comb line filter during a special replay. The video cassette recorder thus provides a fast-forwarding replay image, a rewinding replay image and a still image with improved skew distortion from a tape recorded in a long recording mode providing quintuple the recording time of a standard mode. This realizes an excellent special replay image at low cost without requiring an expensive circuit such as a TBC and the like.

    • A method of pre-emphasising a signal comprises the steps of a) receiving the signal as an input; b) applying the input signal to a processing system comprising a pair of parallel signal processing paths each comprising a non-linear phase filter and a non-linearity, and a further parallel path, wherein the filters in the pair of processing paths have equal but opposite phase responses and substantially equal magnitude responses, and wherein the outputs of the parallel processing paths are combined to produce the raw pre-emphasised signal; whereby the input signal is subjected to a non-linear dynamic range compression which is phase linear. Alternatively or additionally the input signal is split into at least three different frequency bands for non-linear processing. Preferably the pre-emphasised signal is pre-corrected using an iterative system. Complementary de-emphasis systems are also described, as well as pre-emphasis and de-emphasis apparatus.

    • A video signal recording and reproducing apparatus comprises a magnetic tape (4) into which video signals are recorded, A preemphasis circuit (35) modifies the video signals prior to the recording into the magnetic tape (4), so as to increase magnitude of high-frequency components with respect to magnitude of low-frequency components on time base. A record start or end ID signal is generated in response to a record start or end signal in an ID signal recording circuit (36) which memorizes this ID signal into a corresponding portion of the magnetic tape (4). A mute circuit (46) resets the preemphasis circuit (35) in response to the record start or end signal. There is further provided a deemphasis circuit (37) for modifying the video signals after reproducing from the magnetic tape (4) in a complementary manner with respect to the preemphasis circuit (35), so as to decrease magnitude of high-frequency components with respect to magnitude of low-frequency components on time base. An ID signal detecting circuit (38) detects the record start or end ID signal from the magnetic tape (4) and generates an ID detecting signal. A mute circuit (49) resets the deemphasis circuit (37) in response to the ID detecting signal.

    • A digital non-linear pre-emphasis/de-emphasis apparatus includes a first filter for multiplying an input signal by a first coefficient varying non-linearly according to the amplitude of the input signal, to thereby change the gain of the input signal, and a second filter for multiplying the gain-altered input signal by a second non-linear coefficient according to the gain value of the input signal to thereby change its passband with respect to the input signal. The apparatus changes the frequency response characteristic according to the input signal amplitude and obtains an emphasis amount. Furthermore, the apparatus selectively adds or subtracts the input signal and the emphasis amount according to a received record or reproduction mode signal, to thereby increase the S/N ratio of a VCR system and enhance the stability thereof.

    • A video noise reduction system for use in a video signal recording apparatus adapted to record red, blue and green primary color component video signals on a plurality of separate tracks of a magnetic recording medium. The component video signals are applied to a matrix circuit which produces a wide-band luminance signal. The video noise reduction system includes a band splitter circuit for splitting the wide-band luminance signal into an upper-band luminance signal and a lower-band luminance signal and an emphasis circuit for emphasizing the low level components of the upper-band luminance signal before the upper-band luminance signal is FM modulated. Since the emphasis circuit follows the band splitter circuit having a flat phase versus frequency characteristic, the video noise reduction circuit can reduce video noise without causing distortion of the frequency modulated video signal.
