    • Apparatus and methods are disclosed for automatically inspecting two- or three-dimensional objects or subjects. A detector and the object are moved relative to each other. In one form, a detector, such as a camera or radiation receiver, moves around an object, which is supported to be rotatable such that the detector may receive electromagnetic energy signals from the object from a variety of angles. The energy may be directed as a beam at and reflected from the object, as for visible light, or passed through the object, as for x-ray radiation. Alternatively, the detector passively receives energy from the object, as in an infrared detector. The detector generates analog image signals resulting from the detected radiation, and an electronic computer process and analyzes the analog signals and generates digital codes, which may be stored or employed to control a display.

    • An automatic scanning apparatus and method for detecting the presence of one or more objects in an image field under investigation or inspection. Electro-optical scanning means, such as a television camera, is employed to scan an image field and generate output electrical signals which vary in accordancd with variations in the optical characteristics of the matter and objects in the image field scanned. Such signals are computer processed and analyzed to generate coded electrical signals which define optical characteristics of portion of the image field scanned, such as objects or the images of objects scanned, their shape, color of a combination of color and shape. Electronic means is provided to generate further coded electrical signals which indicate the presence of one or more objects in the image field scanned and may be used to effect intelligent indications thereof, to control one or more devices such as a motor or motors and/or to provide information for computational purposes to be rpocessed and utilized by a computer. In one form, that shape of an object or objects is detected arid coded signals generated are employed to effect a comparison of such shape with information relating to the shapes of known objects to identify the object or objects scanned. In another form, the color or surface characteristics of an object is detected and resulting signals indicative thereof are compared with information derived from a memory to identify either the object or its color or surface characteristics. In a third form both shape and color are detected and compared with recorded information for identification purposes.

    • In the disclosed embodiments the video signal is recorded on successive longitudinal tracks with high frequency bias. The sound may be recorded transversely on adjacent tracks or may be recorded with the video as pulse modulation in the horizontal blanking intervals. The video bias frequency is selected so as to avoid beat notes with the video signal. The horizontal and vertical sync signals may be amplified separate from the composite video and then added thereto so as to record sync signals of increased amplitude. The picture signal from a television receiver may be recorded without further amplification.

Means are provided for reading out the photosite array such that a plurality of blocks of photosites are read out in parallel, each block being comprised of a plurality of adjacent photosites read out in serial format to produce a plurality of parallel signals for each one-dimensional image sample, each parallel signal containing serial format information. Means are provided for reformatting the signals of a plurality of one dimensional image samples taken sequentially over a time interval into line sequential format suitable for video display to produce a visual record of the event along a time axis.
