    • Systems and methods that employ receiver circuitry to provide frequency display signals to a digital display without the presence or use of any external timing reference. One or more properties of a controllable local oscillator of a receiver circuit may be heavily or extensively characterized by measuring the local oscillator frequency under a variety of temperature and process conditions, and minimum to maximum frequencies. Measured local oscillator characterization information may be stored in memory, and may be accessed and used during normal operation to control the controllable local oscillator to produce a desired oscillator frequency for tuning the receiver circuitry to a desired radio frequency and for producing digital frequency display signals that are representative of the tuned radio frequency.

    • A television receiver includes a light emitting diode channel number display. The supply voltage for the display is developed by an amplifier in response to a control voltage generated by a control circuit including a light sensing element for controlling the contrast and color level properties of the picture produced by the receiver as a direct function of the ambient light in the receiver's environment. The amplifier is arranged so that the supply voltage for the LED channel number display, and therefore its illumination, is a direct function of the ambient light and tracks the contrast and color level properties of the picture. In addition, the gain of the amplifier is selected so that the photometric brightness of the LED channel number display as perceived by a viewer is attenuated with respect to the photometric brightness of the picture as perceived by a viewer.

    • An all channel television varactor diode tuning system has a presettable counter for deriving the number of the receivable television channel by counting pulses indicative of the tuner local oscillator frequency, which is varied by a voltage ramp circuit under the control of a comparator. The derived channel number is supplied to one input of the comparator, and a channel number selector supplies an encoded desired two digit channel number to the other comparator input and to a frequency band decoder. The band decoder supplies signals to establish appropriate preset counts for the counter in accordance with the frequency band. The channel number selector includes a keyboard coupled to a multi-location tens and units memory for encoding and storing desired channel numbers. The keyboard is also coupled to a function/number decoder which distinguishes between digits and controls the state of a flip/flop in decoder circuitry which subsequently controls a units and tens position display device. The flip/flop, through logic circuitry, enables display of a first digit entered at the keyboard in the tens display position while blanking the units position and enables both display positions only for completed two digit channel number entries.

    • A multiband radio transceiver capable of operating in the CW, USB, and LSB modes is disclosed including a dual conversion receiver having digital apparatus for displaying the carrier frequency of the signal to which the transceiver is tuned. A mixer is included for deriving a premix signal related in frequency to the frequencies of two local oscillator signals. The display apparatus includes a counter for counting the frequency of the premix signal. In order to provide a direct display of the tuned signal carrier frequency, a number which varies according to the intermediate frequency of the signal to which the transceiver is tuned is loaded into the counter prior to occurrence of the counting operation. Apparatus is provided for loading the proper number into the counter in accord with the operating mode of the transceiver.

    • A digital tuning indicator for use with tunable electronic apparatus such as FM multiplex receivers includes a harmonic generator which produces a multitude of RF voltages corresponding, respectively, to the frequencies to which the device may be tuned over the frequency band of interest. A mixer or beat generator is responsive to the variable frequency output of the local RF oscillator of the receiver and the harmonic corresponding to the frequency to which the receiver is tuned. A pulse generator coupled to the output of the beat generator produces a pulse when the frequency to which the receiver is tuned approaches the frequency of a station within the frequency band. These pulses are counted by a digital counter which is calibrated to provide a visual indication of the frequency of the station to which the receiver is tuned.

    • Disclosed is a digital tuning indicator for an automatic direction finder (ADF) equipment used in aircraft comprising a counter to measure the ADF local oscillator frequency, off-set logic modify the measured count to reflect the intermediate frequency representing the difference between the local oscillator frequency and the desired incoming frequency, and a digital display to provide an exact indication of the frequency of the incoming station to which the system is tuned. The off-set logic operates by resetting the counter when it reaches a count equal to the intermediate frequency thereby subtracting this value from the total count accumulated during each operating cycle. Control of the foregoing is provided by a timing generator or programmer which establishes the counting and data display intervals.
