    • Channel selecting apparatus for use with at least first and second tuning devices, each tuning device being responsive to a channel selecting signal supplied thereto for being tuned to a corresponding frequency. At least first and second selectors are provided for producing first and second selector signals, respectively, representing those channels to which the first and second tuning devices are tunable. A set of adjustable elements, common to all of the tuning devices are settable to produce respective channel selecting signals. At least first and second sampling circuits, associated with the first and second tuning devices, respectively, are responsive to first and second phases, respectively, of a switching signal to sample a channel selecting signal applied thereto. A set of switching circuits is provided, each switching circuit being coupled to a respective one of the adjustable elements to receive a respective first selector signal and a respective second selector signal. Each switching circuit is conditioned by the first phase of the switching signal to enable the channel selecting signal produced by the adjustable element coupled thereto to be applied to the first sampling circuit if a first selector signal is supplied thereto, and each switching circuit is conditioned by the second phase of the switching signal to enable the channel selecting signal produced by the adjustable element coupled thereto to be applied to the second sampling circuit if a second selector signal is supplied thereto. The channel selecting signals sampled by the first and second sampling circuits are applied to the first and second tuning devices, respectively.

    • An electronic tuner, particularly suited for a VHF/UHF television receiver using voltage tuned circuits. A two digit decimal channel selector has a binary coded output. The output representing the channel selected is connected with both a VHF decoder and a UHF decoder which includes a memory programmed for a plurality of UHF channels. A memory scanner and a comparator choose the selected UHF channel from the memory and actuate the tuning means for the selected UHF channel. A UHF programmer directs storage of channel indicia at a selected address in the memory.

    • An electronic tuner control system particularly adapted for television receivers employs a gated oscillator for sequentially stepping the tuner from one channel selection to the next. The system includes a counter responsive to the gated oscillator for causing the sequential scanning or stepping to take place in either the "up" or "down" direction. Separate tuning potentiometers are associated with each channel and are selected in sequence under control of the counter. Each potentiometer is set to either a first range of settings indicative of a valid tuning voltage for that channel or to a second range indicating that no tuning or channel selection is to be effected for such a second or "non-preferred" setting. All of the tuning potentiometers are coupled to an analog steering circuit comprised of isolating diodes, and only one potentiometer at a time is selected to apply a tuning voltage to the output of the steering circuit under control of the counter. The output voltage from the analog steering circuit comprises the tuning voltage supplied to the electronic tuners of the receiver, and this voltage also is sensed by an override circuit which automatically causes the oscillator to operate at a high frequency to effectively skip over the "non-preferred" channels. When a channel which has a valid tuning voltage on it is selected, the override circuit causes the oscillator to operate at a lower frequency to give the operator of the tuning system an opportunity to de-energize or release the control circuit to stop on the selected channel. If the control circuit is released or de-energized when the oscillator is operating in its higher frequency, it continues to operate until a channel with a valid tuning voltage is selected, whereupon further scanning terminates.

    • A triggered neon lamp memory circuit selectively produces control voltages for an electrically controlled rado wave receiver. Each stage comprises a neon lamp, a transistor and a control voltage potentiometer coupled in series between a common source of sustaining potential and a point of reference potential. When the neon lamp of a given stage is triggered, the associated transistor is turned on to effectively couple a fixed voltage to the control voltage potentiometer. When the neon lamp turns off, the transistor turns off to remove the fixed voltage from the control voltage potentiometer while, at the same time, enabling the voltage at one terminal of the neon lamp to remain substantially above the reference potential to thereby reduce the voltage across the neon lamp to a point substantially below the trigger level. In one embodiment, the neon lamp of any one stage is triggered on by temporarily coupling a trigger potential to the neon lamp by manually actuating a touch contact. The triggering of any one lamp lowers the common sustaining potential to thereby extinguish the neon lamp of the previously activated stage. In another embodiment, a shifting circuit, either remotely or locally activated, successively triggers each lamp so that the circuit functions in the nature of a ring counter. In the remote control embodiment, programming means are provided to cause the shifting circuit to selectively prefer preselected ones of the plurality of stages by providing a greater selection period therefor.

The channel selection apparatus comprises a synchronizing signal discrimination circuit having a NAND gate and a charge/discharge circuit for detecting a synchronizing signal component appearing in a synchronizing signal separation circuit, a wave shaping circuit for producing a pulse output of a predetermined pulse width when triggered by the output at the defeat signal output terminal, and a NAND gate coupled to the synchronizing signal discriminating circuit, the wave shaping circuit and the sequential shift signal input terminal of the channel selection IC for producing a signal to sequentially shift the selected channel position by applying a signal to the sequential shift signal input terminal when the synchronizing signal discrimination circuit does not detect the synchronizing signal and the wave shaping circuit produces no output, and producing a signal to stop the sequential shift operation when the synchronizing signal discrimination circuit detects the synchronizing signal. This arrangement is particularly useful in selecting a channel which is receiving a broadcasting television station signal when the television receiver is turned on.
