    • A control device for an appliance which can assume a level selected from a range of levels includes a keypad representative of the range of levels to enable a user to select a level, an “off” key for switching off the appliance, and a processor unit connected to the keypad and to the “off” key. If the appliance is off and the keypad is operated to select a target level, the processor unit causes the appliance to assume the selected target level. If the appliance is off and the “off” key is operated, the processor unit leaves the appliance off. If the appliance is on and the keypad is operated to select a target level, the processor unit causes the appliance to assume the selected target level if that level is different from its current level. If the appliance is on and the “off” key is operated, the processor unit switches off the appliance.

    • An improved window operator has an electrically controlled drive for moving a window between opened and closed positions in response to a command. A plurality of switches are provided for manually or remotely commanding movement of the drive to move the window to a select desired position between the opened and closed positions. A position sensing routine senses actual position of the window between the open and closed positions. The position sensing routine includes a timer for storing a value representing actual position. The value is selectively incremented or decremented at a select rate in response to duration of operation of the drive to move the window between the open and closed positions. The control senses electrical power supplied to the drive. An adjustment routine adjusts the select rate of the timer in response to electric power deviating from a select desired power level. The control compare the desired position to actual position and controls an output coupled to the drive for developing an electrical signal to control the drive in response to a difference between the select and actual positions to minimize the difference.

    • A valve position controller tuning method avoids impact of friction in valve positioner tuning by building a dynamic model of a valve positioner from a monotonic open-loop response of a valve stem position to a change in valve position controller output. To this end, a model form is selected based on the type of pneumatic actuator and relay that controls valve flow modulating of member motion, and the valve position controller is operated in an open-loop mode. The method includes changing a valve position controller output signal to cause the valve positioner to move a valve flow modulating member, connected to valve positioner, monotonically from one stuck position to another stuck position immediately after a motion in that same direction. When a valve stem position reaches a position threshold, a first valve stem position change and a corresponding time change are measured. The method includes measuring valve stem position changes at times that depend on the first measured time change. Using the measured results, valve positioner response parameters are calculated for the selected model form from which valve position controller tuning constants are calculated.
