    • A method of triggering a component in a distributed safety-related system, i.e., a component of an X-by-wire system in a motor vehicle, is described. The component is triggered by a process computer assigned to the component and connected to a communication system via a communications controller. A monitoring unit which is independent of the process computer is provided for monitoring the process computer. To simplify the configuration of such a safety-related system while at the same time at least retaining the safety that is achievable on enabling the components, the functions of the monitoring unit are executed by the communications controller. The communications controller may execute a question-and-answer communication with the process computer.

    • A method and system for analyzing fault conditions in an automation system. An error controller (10) connects to one or more machines or machine elements (12) in an automation system. Signals from the machine (12) are input to one or more inputs (14) of the error controller (10). Internal logic to the error controller (10) uses the inputs to identify possible error conditions, which are then transmitted to a central controller (16) via error controller outputs (18) of the error controller (10). A display monitor (20) provides a user interface for error analysis and configuration of the error controller (10). A PC (22) is provided for configuration of the error controller (10) by running suitable application software for the configuration thereof. When an error condition arises, corresponding error messages are extracted from a database and presented to a user via the display (20).

    • An automated data management system for enabling the analysis and control of the performance of photolithography steppers in a submicron fabrication facility is disclosed. In a preferred embodiments, software running on each of a plurality of first personal computers (PCs), each of which is connected to one of a plurality of steppers, is used to append printer data generated by the steppers responsive to tests performed therein to ASCII files associated with the steppers and subsequently to upload the ASCII files to a network drive at specified time intervals. Once the ASCII files have been uploaded to the VAX drive, the files may be accessed by a user outside the facility using a second PC on which is running a utility of the present invention for providing automated analysis of the data for a particular stepper as requested by a user. In one aspect of the invention, the utility of the present invention comprises a windows-based user interface for enabling the user to select and initiate analysis procedures by selecting from a variety of options displayed on the user's PC. In another aspect of the invention, the utility of the present invention enables the user to select from among a variety of formats, including browse tables, charts and graphs, for viewing the resulting analysis data.
