    • This invention relates to a process of rearing poultry. The process comprises the steps of housing the poultry in a heated poultry shed, collecting poultry litter from the poultry shed, thermally treating the poultry litter and harnessing heat generated by the thermally treated poultry litter, and heating the poultry shed using the harnessed heat. In this way, the poultry litter may be used to heat the poultry in the shed and other expensive fuels will not have to be purchased to carry out this task, thereby reducing the operating cost of the poultry rearing process. Furthermore, the poultry litter will be available in an abundant supply. Due to the fact that the fuel is so readily available, it is possible to preheat the sheds to the ideal temperature prior to receiving the poultry and ventilate the poultry sheds both of which will result in the poultry thriving.

    • The invention relates to a method and an apparatus for cooling a material to be removed from the grate of a fluidized bed furnace. Material at a high temperature is passed from the grate of the fluidized bed furnace into a fluidized bed cooler in charges of a given size by measuring the quantity of the material accumulating in the fluidized bed cooler. When the quantity of the material in the cooler has reached a predetermined limit value, the supply of material into the fluidized bed cooler is prevented. The charge is cooled in the fluidized bed cooler by fluidization air and via heat transfer into a cooling liquid circulation system and the temperature of the charge is measured. The charge is removed when the temperature of the charge has fallen to a predetermined limit value. The second end (5) of a supply conduit (3) is provided with a supply valve (15) actuated by a power means (16). A discharge conduit (14) is provided with a discharge valve (17) actuated by a second power means (18). Quantity detection means (19, 20) are provided to produce quantity data regarding the amount of material in a fluidized bed space (11), and temperature measuring means (21) are provided to produce temperature data. A control device (22) controls the first power means (16) to open and close the supply valve (15) and the second power means (18) to open and close the discharge valve (17) on the basis of the quantity data and temperature data and the predetermined limit values of quantity and temperature so that the loading of material into the fluidized bed space and its cooling and removal from the fluidized bed space take place in a charge-by-charge and cyclic manner.

    • An ash control valve apparatus for use in a system that includes a fluidized-bed system which includes a housing, a seat in the housing for passage of particulate material, a plug dimensioned and configured for mating engagement with the seat, and apparatus for moving the plug from a first position wherein the plug is disposed in seated engagement with the seat to a second position wherein the plug is disposed in spaced relationship to the seat. The apparatus for moving the plug includes apparatus for mounting the plug that includes an elongated tube to which the plug is fixed. The apparatus for mounting includes a plurality of axially extending ribs disposed on the circumference of the elongated tube and a plurality of channels disposed in a bore in the plug. Apparatus in the plug cooperates with the plurality of channels to define a bayonet type receiving structure dimensioned and configured for receiving the plurality of axially extending ribs and allowing relative rotational movement between the plug and the ribs to produce locking engagement therebetween. In some forms of the apparatus the apparatus for cooling the tube includes a concentric hollow internal member for directing flow of a coolant along the axial extent of the tube. A portion of the tube may extend through a wall of the housing opposite the seat; and a bonnet assembly may surround the axial portion of the tube may extending through a wall of the housing, the bonnet assembly insures a dynamic seal between the tube and the bonnet assembly as the tube is moved axially from the first position to the second position.

    • A fluidized bed furnace for burning dehydrated sludge, comprises a furnace housing having a bottom on which the fluidized bed is supported. A rotary drum is mounted so that its one end connects to the discharge opening, and it is provided with a screw having a pitch of a size to permit coarse particles to move between blade elements and to move them out of the discharge opening into a collecting shaft where the coarse particles are dropped into a receiving device.
