    • In accordance with the resent invention, there is provided a fugitive emission detection system for use in conjunction with a valve having a packing deign which includes a primary packing and a secondary packing. The valve further includes a leak port which is disposed within the valve bonnet between the primary and secondary packings. The detection system is operative to maintain the leak port in a normally open state. As a result, any fluid leakage past the primary packing is normally sent to the detection system, as opposed to being applied to and thus pressurizing the secondary packing. In the event of that a prescribed level of fluid leakage beyond the primary packing is detected, the leak port will be closed. The closure of the leak port facilitates the pressurization of the secondary packing.

    • The invention relates to a reciprocating installation (1) for the compression of a current gas, comprising: at least one cylinder (2) which defines a compression chamber (3); a piston (4) which co-operates with the cylinder, an actuation rod (6) extending from said piston; a cylinder base (7) comprising a passage (8) for the linear and reciprocating displacement of the piston rod; and a stuffing box-type sealing device (9) between the piston rod (6) and the cylinder base (7). The invention is characterized in that: a source (16) that provides a pressurized insulating gas of no interest is used; the sealing device stack comprises two spacer rings (111, 112), namely a front ring (111) which is disposed at a distance from the cylinder and a rear ring (112) which is disposed nearer the cylinder; and the cylinder base or the body of the sealing device (7) is equipped with a front hole (151) and a rear hole (152), such that, on one side, the two holes are communicated with two external peripheral cells (141, 142) in the two spacer rings respectively and, on the other side, at least the front hole (151) is communicated with the insulating gas source (16), such as to use an internal annular gap in order to generate a tubular insulating gaseous path comprising the insulating gas along the length of the piston rod (6) practically from one end of the sealing device (9) to the other.

    • An adaptor that can be used with rotary fluid equipment will protect mechanical seals and/or packing material adjacent a seal cavity (18) of the equipment. The adaptor includes an annular body (30) with a central bore (32) adapted to receive a shaft (12) of the equipment. When used with mechanical seals the adaptor is receivable in the cavity at the entrance thereto and it has a portion which surface which effects contact with a complementary surface of the seal. When used with packing the adaptor fits within the cavity and defines an outboard extension in which the packing can be received. The bore defines two portions, one of which is close to the shaft (52) and another portion (54) which flares outwardly from the one portion towards the outboard end of the adaptor. Each bore portion has a spiral groove (56, 58) therein, which groove serves to redirect contaminant material contained in fluids surrounding the shaft away from the seal cavity.

According to one aspect, a packing cartridge includes: a generally-cylindrical sleeve adapted to be at least partially positioned in the packing bore, a first abutment ring positioned in the sleeve, and a second abutment ring positioned in the sleeve and co-axially spaced apart from the first abutment ring. Telescoping structures are operatively positioned between the first abutment ring and the second abutment ring. According to another aspect, a structure forming a circumferential pressure-ring groove is provided. A pressure ring is positioned in the pressure-ring groove, the pressure ring having at least one smaller external dimension than an internal dimension of the pressure-ring groove, whereby at least one clearance is provided between the pressure-ring groove and the pressure ring. These aspects can be advantageously practiced together.

    • A lubricated packing assembly for a reciprocating pump. The packing assembly includes a packing ring for sealingly engaging the pump plunger. A seal carrier is disposed adjacent to the packing ring. A vent zone is defined between the packing ring and a vent passage extending longitudinally through the seal carrier. The vent zone includes grooves on inner and outer surfaces of the seal carrier and a hole interconnecting the grooves. This hole is in communication with the vent passage. A lubrication passage is also provided in the seal carrier, and a seal is positioned on opposite sides of the lubrication passage. Lubricant is provided to the plunger between the seals. The lubrication passage and the vent passage are isolated from one another so that communication therebetween is prevented. In this way, leakage past the packing ring is vented without contaminating the lubricant so that pressure from the pumped fluid cannot stop lubricant flow.
