    • In a sealing device installed to an installation groove which is provided in an outer peripheral surface of one member among two members relatively moving, and sealing between the two members by coming into close contact with the other member which is positioned in an outer peripheral side of the installation groove and one side wall of the installation groove, the sealing device has a seal ring, a support ring having a pressing surface which comes into contact with an inner peripheral corner portion the seal ring, and a spring means which presses the support ring and the seal ring. A collapsing margin in relation to the taper surface shaped pressing surface in the support ring is normally set in an inner peripheral corner portion in the seal ring. According to the sealing device, it is possible to improve pressure resistance and sealing performance.

    • A control valve for a double acting type Stirling engine of the type having two or more piston assemblies reciprocating in bores with each of the piston assemblies separating isolated volumes of a working gas. The control valve provides the functions of a check valve which allows an internally defined volume within the engine to be held at a low pressure near the minimum pressure of the cycle volumes. The valve may further be actuated to unload the engine to provide low starting torque and to unload the engine in case of an engine or load malfunction. The control valve further provides a controlled leakage path for working fluid flowing between the cycle volumes and the minimum pressure volume which acts as part of a pressure balancing system for the Stirling engine which maintains the volume or mass of a working fluid in a balanced condition between the cycle volumes.

    • A rod seal assembly for a Stirling Engine of the type having two or more piston assemblies reciprocating within cylinder bores. The rod seal assembly seals against a connecting rod extending between a piston and a kinematic drive system. The rod seal assembly includes a separated cap seal assembly and a base seal assembly with a hollow cavity formed therebetween. The cap seal assembly and base seal assembly include sealing element features which provide high performance gas sealing and excellent durability characteristics. The hollow interior cavity of the rod seal assembly may be used as part of an internal volume within the engine used as part of a pressure balancing system for the isolated cycle volumes within the engine.

    • A seal for a reciprocating plunger is formed of a hard polyimide plastic, rather than the relatively soft elastomers of earlier seals. The present seal has a conical section, with the tapered face fitting closely within the mating conical face of a hard metal retainer. An O-ring resides in a groove within the seal to provide low pressure sealing between the plastic seal and the metal retainer. The tapers of the seal and retainer urge the seal inwardly toward the plunger by operational pressures, thereby providing a better seal. The present seal provides greatly extended life over softer prior art seals, and will generally last for the life of the pump or other mechanism in which it is installed. Yet, the plastic material allows some flow under high pressures, allowing the seal to conform closely to the plunger surface during operation and throughout the life of the seal.

    • A shaft seal apparatus that exhibits a good and reliable sealing performance, even when a rotating shaft undergoes axial vibration, eccentric revolution, or the like. This shaft seal apparatus has gland packings (2) stuffed in a sealed space (10) formed between a rotating shaft (9) and a stuffing box (1), with gland packings (2) pressed between a first packing gland (3) on a sealed liquid region side (7) and a second packing gland (4) on an atmospheric region side (8). The first packing gland (3) is fixed to a rotary equipment body (6) and the second packing gland (4) is to the stuffing box (1). A screw bolt (15) extending in the axial direction of the rotating shaft (9) is anchored to the first packing gland (3). The stuffing box (1) is provided with a through hole (16) larger than the screw bolt (15) in the flange (1a). The screw bolt (15) running through the through hole (16) has a tightening nut (17) thereon at a place which is out of and backward of the hole (16). A compression coil spring (18) is mounted on screw bolt (15) between flange (1a) and tightening nut (17).

There is further provided a secondary seal of packing material positioned between the first outer ring and the wall of the heat tube.

    • A dual rated live loaded packing system for a valve stem includes at least one thrust load assembly extending between opposing facing elements on a valve body and a packing gland, respectively, for exerting a live load through a gland onto a packing ring contained in a packing chamber around the stem. The thrust load assembly includes an elongated tension member engaging a first one of the ears at one end and a second of the ears at an opposite end. An adjustable nut is threadedly engaged on the tension member having an end facing a surface on the second ear. A spring element is mounted on the tension member between the nut and the second ear for biasing the nut away from the second ear. A cylindrical spacer is mounted on the tension member enclosing the spring element for setting up a minimum value space between the nut and the second ear. A stop washer is mounted on the tension member between the end face of the nut and the ear and includes first and second opposite stop surfaces for selective engagement with a surface on the spacer to provide different thrust bias values between the ears depending on which of the first or second stop surface is aligned to face the second ear.
