    • A marine propulsion unit utilizing a turbine engine is provided as a drop-in module. The propulsion unit includes a base which forms a part of the hull. The propulsion unit includes a drive unit which is mounted to the engine. Both the engine and the drive unit are moved with respect to the hull to change the angle of the propeller with respect to the hull. A hydraulic resistance system is provided to provide resistance to a turbine engine when in an idle condition. An auxiliary power transfer is provided to power an auxiliary gen-set and power unit. A main electrical power unit having an auxiliary engine is also connected to the power transfer unit. The auxiliary engine may be used to drive the vessel at low speeds and maneuvering conditions. One of the main engines may be used to drive both of the shafts through the power transfer unit.

    • An environmental control system has a cooling loop including a cooling turbine which, in use, drives a compressor, and an intercooler apparatus, for cooling air compressed by the compressor prior to the air being expanded and cooled over the cooling turbine, and a heat exchanger to which at least a proportion of the cooled and expanded air from the turbine is fed to cool a heat load, and wherein, in a first mode of operation, the cooling loop is closed so that the air circulates around the closed loop from the compressor to the intercooler apparatus to the cooling turbine, and thence to the heat exchanger, and back to the compressor, and in a second mode of operation the cooling loop is open to allow working fluid to pass from the system whilst further working fluid is introduced into the cooling loop, and wherein an ambient air inlet valve is provided to provide for the admission of ambient air to the cooling loop, when the system is operating in the second mode of operation.

    • A watercraft constructed according to the invention includes at least one hull according to the invention described in the grandparent and great-grandparent patent applications that issued as U.S. Pat. Nos. 6,314,903 and 6,250,245, which hull includes first and second channel defining structures connected to the hull that define a first channel on a port side of the hull with a forwardly facing first channel entrance and a second channel on a starboard side of the hull with a second forwardly facing channel entrance. According to one aspect of the invention, the hull has a bow that extends to a vertical knife edge, and the first and second wing channel entrances are arranged to form a near horizontal knife edge at the deck level in order to enhance high speed operations. According to another aspect of the invention, there is provided an onboard air system for injecting air into the first and second channels in order to enhance high speed operation of the watercraft. The air system may include a blower powered by an on-deck auxiliary power unit, a blower powered by a main drive diesel or gas turbine, components that divert excess air from a main drive gas turbine, or components that divert exhaust from a jet engine main drive.
