    • Described herein are various embodiments of an apparatus and system for trapping debris and arresting sparks that overcomes at least some shortcomings of the prior art approaches. According to one embodiment, an apparatus is disclosed for mitigating failure of an exhaust after-treatment component in an internal combustion engine system capable of generating an exhaust gas stream. The apparatus includes a housing that includes an exhaust inlet, exhaust outlet, and exhaust flow channel positioned between the exhaust inlet and outlet. Also, the apparatus includes a tubular-shaped mesh screen positioned substantially entirely within the exhaust flow channel. The mesh screen includes a closed end positioned proximate the exhaust inlet of the housing and an opposing open end positioned proximate the exhaust outlet of the housing. The mesh screen is configured to capture failed exhaust after-treatment component particles within the exhaust gas stream.

    • The present specification discloses a muffler for attenuating exhaust noise from an internal combustion engine. The muffler includes a main chamber, an intermediate pipe, a diffuser chamber, a spark arrester, and an exhaust pipe. Exhaust gases from the engine enter the main chamber after which they flow through the intermediate pipe. The intermediate pipe extends back through the main chamber to the diffuser chamber. The spark arrester is a screen held within the exhaust muffler and removably coupled to the exhaust pipe. Gases flow through the screen to separate hot particles. The exhaust pipe extends within the main chamber, completing a 180° bend within the chamber before exiting the main chamber and the muffler. An outer enclosure may surround the muffler. A method of attenuating exhaust gas noise is also disclosed.

    • A combined muffle and spark arrester for use with small internal combustion engines. The muffler includes two expansion chambers through which engine exhaust is passed and a hat-shaped sparkarresting screen positioned within the second chamber. The screen removes particles from the exhaust having a size greater than the screen mesh to prevent the discharge of potentially dangerous sparks. A curved heat shield is supported on the muffler by a plurality of U-shaped brackets which are projection welded to the two chambers. The muffler construction is particularly rigid and the muffler is provided with a removable end cap to provide convenient access for removing the screen for cleaning.
