    • There is provided an apparatus for regulating a compression ratio of an HCCI rotary engine. The engine has a rotor piston rotatable in an operating direction. The stator has one or more combustion chamber throughways, each having at least first and second interior walls. The apparatus comprises, within each combustion chamber throughway, an expansion gate slidably received within the throughway and slidably engaged with and adjacent to the first interior wall, a combustion gate slidably engaged with and adjacent to the expansion gate in the operating direction, and a compression gate slidably engaged with and adjacent to both the combustion gate and the second interior wall, and disposed adjacent the combustion gate in the operating direction. Each gate is slidable longitudinally within the combustion chamber throughway. Rotation of the rotor piston, to a position where a lobe end of the piston aligns with a combustion gate, forms a combustion chamber.

    • A stator (1) has a circular cylindrical internal surface (3) delimiting an operating chamber. A rotor (4) is mounted so as to be rotatable about the axis (8) of the internal surface (3) and has a cylindrical external surface (11), with one generatrix (13) adjacent to the internal surface (3), a diametrically opposite generatrix being spaced from the internal surface. A sealing member (17), projecting through a slot in the stator (1) into the operating chamber and being movable substantially radially, has an axial length substantially equal to that of the rotor (4). The sealing member (17) is connected to the rotor (4) by a linkage which causes the radially inner end of the sealing member to closely follow the external surface (3). A shutter disc (6) at one end of the rotor (4) covers a port (14), in particular an inlet port, in the stator (1). The disc (6) has a through-hole with a first end remote from the operating chamber and a second end opening into the operating chamber, the first end periodically overlapping the port (14) as the rotor (4) rotates.

    • An engine for rotating an output shaft includes a housing which defines an inner cylindrical surface coaxial with the output shaft. A roller member is disposed within the housing and includes an inner cylindrical bearing surface and an outer cylindrical surface spaced from the inner surface of the housing. Longitudinal axis of the rolling member is radially offset from the axis of the housing and the shaft. A mechanism is provided for preventing relative rotation and movement between the housing and the rolling member, and a plurality of chambers are defined between the housing and the rolling member. Devices are provided for selectively introducing expansive gas or fluid into the chamber in rotationally sequential fashion, and devices are further provided for exhausting expanding gas or fluid from the chambers in rotationally sequential fashion to urge the roller member away from the housing and expand the chambers at the site of the expansive gas or fluid introduction. This rolls the roller member about the inner cylindrical surface of the housing with the axis of the roller member rolling about the central axis of the housing and shaft. Finally, a mechanism is provided for rotating the shaft in response to the rolling movement of the roller member within the housing.
