    • A foot treadle for use in opening a sliding door of the type mounted for initial movement in three directional dimensions from its closed position comprises a lever having an axis of rotation. The lever has a leg that depends generally downwardly from the axis and an arm that extends generally laterally from the axis. A pedal is mounted to the arm distally from the axis of rotation. The lever is mounted to a door jamb of a sliding door with the lever leg closely adjacent a lower end of the door for pivotal movement about the lever axis of rotation in pushing and sliding engagement with the door lower end. Upon a person stepping upon the pedal the lever leg applies a force laterally and upwardly against the door lower end thereby urging the door laterally and upwardly out of sealed engagement with the door jamb and floor as the door lower end slides outwardly from the door jamb in sliding contact with the lever leg.

    • A mounting is disclosed for the movable member of a window or door in a fixed frame which comprises four set-off arms connected to corners of the movable member. Each set-off arm is pivoted and slidably mounted to the movable member at one end thereof and pivotally mounted to the frame in an opposite end thereof. An auxiliary arm is pivotally mounted to the set-off arm at an intermediate location thereon and also to the movable member. The set-off arms take up opposite mirror image inclined positions with the movable member in its closed and opened position respectively. The upper set-off arms are mirror images of the lower set-off arms about a plane perpendicular to the plane of the movable member with the pivotal and sliding engagement between upper and lower set-off arms being closer to each other than the pivotal engagement between those set-off arms and their associated auxiliary arms.

    • A shutter assembly for installation on the outside of a building wall including one or two shutter panels fitted with top and bottom rollers moveable along tracks in a plane outwardly spaced from and parallel to the external wall. A rack is carried by each panel inside thereof and a pinion, meshing with this rack, is carried by a shaft extending through the wall and provided at its inner end, inside a building room with a crank wheel for moving the shutter panels between opened and closed position at the side and in front of a window opening respectively. The shutter panels are heat-insulated and are provided with seals to extend around the periphery of the window opening when the panels are in closed position to thereby form an air insulating chamber with a window unit within the window opening. The top rollers together with the rack are fitted with a spring suspension to permit easy installation and removal of the rollers on and from the tracks and to accommodate any variation in the vertical position of the pinion which may have occurred during the installation.

    • A ratchet wheel and resiliently biased stop member arrangement is provided for limiting movement of a movable roof panel member as it travels between respective closed, tilted, and lowered slidably retracted positions. The ratchet wheel is provided with recesses disposed at respective circumferential positions corresponding to predetermined positions of the roof panel member. The resiliently biased members are engageable in these recesses to retain the ratchet wheel at respective predetermined positions such as corresponding to the closed position of the roof panel member, whereby the operator can easily sense the position of the roof member due to the increased resistance caused by the stop member. The stop members and their springs are configured so as to permit overriding of the stop member so that the operator can move the roof panel member away from the respective positions by merely applying additional force to overcome the spring force at the stop member. Preferred embodiments also include a stepping gear arrangement for optimizing the gear ratio in connection with the ratchet wheel while minimizing the forces applied thereto.

    • A sliding panel assembly is provided. A roller mechanism allows the sliding panel to slide between an open position and a closed position. The roller mechanism has a carriage assembly connected to an elongated support member. The sliding panel is fixed to the elongated support member. The carriage assembly is connected to the elongated support member by a plurality of link mechanisms. The carriage assembly carries a plurality of wheels which ride in a track. The link mechanisms allow the sliding panel to be locked in a weatherproof seal against a framed opening in which the sliding panel is placed. The link mechanisms also allow the sliding panel to be removed from the weatherproof seal to facilitate movement of the sliding panel along the track.
