    • A paving machine for reducing transition marks in a mat. The paving machine may comprise a frame, a tow arm, a screed assembly, a sensor and a controller. The screed assembly includes a main screed plate and an extension plate. The main screed plate is configured to pave a first surface section of the mat. The extension plate includes an extension trailing edge having an inner end. The extension plate is configured to pave a second surface section of the mat. The sensor is configured to sense transition marks in the mat proximal to an intersection between the first and second surface sections and to transmit data indicative of such to the controller. The controller may be configured to determine from the data received from the sensor when the inner end is disposed above or below the first plane, and move the inner end to the first plane.

    • An apparatus for use in shearing paving material applied to a surface is provided. This apparatus includes a blade for shearing the asphalt mixture to a desired thickness, cylinders for raising and lowering the blade in response to elevational changes in the surface, at least one signal generator associated with each cylinder and adapted to produce a signal indicative of the elevation of the surface, and at least one signal receiver associated with each signal generator. This blade apparatus is coupled with a prime mover. The receiver is operable to activate the cylinders in response to a signal received from the generator. The blade is raised and lowered as the elevation of the surface changes in response to signals emanating from the generator allowing surface level variations to be evened out while paving.

    • The present mixer for construction materials, such as a bituminous sludge, has a trough with an inlet and an outlet and two mixing shafts equipped with blades rotatably supported in the trough in parallel to each other. The blades are uniformly spaced along both shafts and staggered by 90.degree. around each shaft whereby the blades of each shaft follow one another in helical succession. Simultaneously the blades form four in line rows on each shaft. The arrangement of the blades is identical on each shaft except that the helix formed by the blades on one shaft has preferably a pitch direction opposite to that formed by the blades on the other shaft since the shafts rotate in opposite directions but convey in the same direction. The spacing between adjacent blades on both shafts is the same. However, blades located in the same plane extending perpendicularly to the longitudinal axes of the shafts are always spaced by 90.degree. and blades which face each other extend in parallel to each other when pointing in the opposite directions toward the respective other shaft.
