摘要： A method of producing a melanin comprises oxidizing a phenolic compound at one or more hydroxyl groups thereof, wherein the phenolic compound is selected from 5-hydroxyindole and derivatives thereof and compounds of formula (1) and the oxidation is provided by biotransformation in the presence of an oxidoreductase enzyme, the compound of formula (1), wherein R1 is H or OH; R2 is H, OH orOCH3; R3 is H or OH at least one of R1 and R3 being OH; R4 is selected from H , R, —COOX and R7—COOX, wherein R is an optionally substituted saturated or unsaturated alkyl group having from 1 to 12 carbon atoms, R7 is an optionally substituted saturated or unsaturated alkylene group having from 1 to 12 carbon atoms and X is selected from H and aliphatic and aromatic ester forming groups; and R5 and R6 is each independently selected from H, OH, NH2, OCH3, CH3, SH, NHCO2, NHCH3, COOH and saturated or unsaturated alkyl groups having up to 8 carbon atoms.

摘要： A novel lipomelanin sunscreen complex includes melanin linked to a lipid to form a lipomelanin. One or more ultra-violet-light absorbing compounds can be added to form a lipomelanin sunscreen complex. A method for making the complex includes the oxidization of DOPA in the presence of a lipid and one or more ultra-violet absorbing compounds to form a mixture and precipitating the complex from the mixture by the addition of acid. The lipomelanin sunscreen complex provides protection against harmful ultra-violet radiation. The level of UV protection may be varied according to the presence and properties of the ultra-violet absorbing compounds in the complex.

Such melanin can be produced by combining dopachrome and 5,6-dihydroxyindole (or allowing dopachrome to spontaneously form 5,6-dihydroxyindole) and an appropriate enzyme or by combining 5,6-dihydroxyindole and 5,6-dihydroxyindole-2-carboxylic acid or by incubating 5,6-dihydroxyindole-2-carboxylic acid alone. The melanin is also useful for providing a sun-screen to mammalian skin and hair.

Advantageously, the melanin is capable of being filtered through at least a 0.45 micron size filter, and has a molecular weight of greater than 10,000 kilodaltons. The melanin is useful for providing a naturally-appearing tan to mammalian skin and hair. Such melanin can be produced by combining dopachrome and an appropriate enzyme, or by incubating 5,6-dihydroxyindole-2-carboxylic acid alone or with 5,6-dihydroxyindole, or with 3-amino-tyrosine. The melanin is also useful for providing a sun-screen to mammalian skin and hair, to treat post-inflammatory hypo- and hyperpigmentation, to tint glass and plastic, to protect industrial materials against ultraviolet damage, and as a coloring agent in foodstuffs such as coffee, tea, soda, whiskey and liquors.
