    • A phthalocyanine of Formula (1): ##STR1## wherein: M.sub.k PC is a phthalocyanine nucleus of Formula (2): ##STR2## M is a metal atom, a chloro-metal group, and oxy-metal group or hydrogen; k is inverse of 1/2 valency of M; R and R.sup.1 each independently is an organic radical;R.sup.2 is H or optionally substituted alkyl;a is an average value from 15 to 8;b is an average value from 1 to 8; anda+b is from 15 to 16; and sulphonated derivatives thereof and process for their preparation.The phthalocyanines of the present invention are useful for absorbing electro-magnetic radiation from for example a laser source and may be used in a coating for optical data storage disks, or in security applications such as printing banknotes or cheques, or in the preparation of lithographic printing plates or in washing powders to assist in bleaching.

    • A colorant for natural or synthetic resinous or polymeric materials, having the formula A--[SO.sub.2 --N(R.sub.2)--Y].sub.1-4 ; wherein: R.sub.2 is selected for example from hydrogen, methyl, cyclohexyl, phenyl or Y; A is a nonionic metallophthalocyanine chromophore which can be substituted for example with halogen, alkyl. alkoxy, alkylthio, or aryloxy; Y is a poly(oxyalkylene) moiety containing at least three monomeric units or mixtures thereof of the formula (--RO--) wherein each R is straight or branched alkylene of 1-4 carbons or mixtures thereof, up to about 20 mole percent of said monomeric units may be connected by one or more linking groups such as alkyleneoxy, --NH--, or --NHCONH--, and wherein Y can be terminated by hydrogen, or by at branch substituents, containing 1--3 groups or moieties selected from alkyl, cycloalkyl, acyl, or aryl; wherein any of the above recited hydrocarbon groups, moieties or substitutents may themselves be substituted with up to four substitutents selected, for example, from alkyl, halogen, mercapto, alkoxycarbonyl, hydroxy, alkoxy, or the like; and wherein each aliphatic hydrocarbon portion or moiety of the groups, moieties or substituents recited above contains from 1-20 carbons.

    • A metal phthalocyanine compound that is useful as a black colorant suitable for use in an ink-jet recording ink, a water-based ink composition containing the metal phthalocyanine compound, and a product colored with the metal phthalocyanine compound. In particular, a metal phthalocyanine compound having, as substituents, both an acylamino group and a carboxyethylamino group on the phthalocyanine structure, or the salt thereof is used as a black colorant. Recorded images formed by the use of this colorant are excellent in light fastness and water fastness and exhibit absorption in infrared and visible regions, so that highly effective utilization can be found in printing of, for example, bar codes which are available in near-infrared ray reading.
