    • A crane control system for determining a suitable real-time operating regime for a crane arranged to lift cargo from a marine vessel, the system includes an imaging means associated with the crane, a processing means, and a memory means. The imaging means is arranged to capture images of the vessel when it is located generally below the crane and within the operational range of the crane. The processing means is operable to calculate from the captured images movement parameters characterizing the movement of the vessel relative to the crane. The memory contains performance data representative of the performance characteristics of the crane and cargo data representative of the weight of individual items of said cargo. The processing means is further configured to compare the calculated movement parameters to the performance data and the cargo data and to determine from said comparison a safe operating regime for the crane.

    • An apparatus for manipulating a power tong to various positions on the rig floor. A boom of fixed length is mounted to a drilling rig either directly or indirectly by means of a bearing housing. The bearing housing is slewable about a vertical axis and the boom is axially drivable with respect to the bearing housing, these motions together or individually causing lateral motion to the power tong. In one embodiment, the bearing housing and thereby the boom is tilted by use of hydraulic cylinders mounted between the bearing housing and slewing housing, allowing the elevation of the power tong to be changed. In a second embodiment, the end of the boom at the power tong is supported by a hydraulic cylinder and hanging cable. In a third embodiment, the power tong is supported directly by a hanging cable and hydraulic cylinder arrangement and the end of the boom pushes and slews to impart lateral motion indirectly to the power tong by way of the hanging cable or cylinder or tong itself.

Controls mounted on the power tongs and/or on the upright member permit control of the rotation of the boom, the upright member, and the power tong.
