    • Braking systems for railway cars are provided. A braking system defines a longitudinal axis, and includes a first brake assembly, a second brake assembly, and an actuator operable to generate a linear force, the actuator disposed proximate the second brake assembly. The braking system further includes a movable rod and a fixed rod extending between the first brake assembly and the second brake assembly. In some embodiments, the braking system further includes a lever and a slack adjuster disposed proximate the first brake assembly, the slack adjuster connected to the first brake assembly and the lever and operable to adjust a distance along the longitudinal axis between a reference point of the first brake assembly and a pivot point of the lever. In some embodiments, the braking system includes a strut connected to the second brake assembly, the actuator, fixed rod and movable rod connected to the strut.

    • A strut for a brake beam assembly includes a strut body extending along a longitudinal axis between a proximal end and a distal end. At least one slot is defined in the strut body and receives and supports a brake lever extending non-parallel to the longitudinal axis. A compression member engager is connected to a distal end of the strut body and is configured to connect the strut body to a compression member of the brake beam assembly. A tension member engager is connected to the proximal end of the strut body and is configured to engage a tension member of the brake beam assembly. At least one fastener is configured to engage the compression member engager to fasten the compression member engager on the compression member. At least a portion of the strut body is rotatable about the longitudinal axis with respect to the compression member engager and the tension member engager to be oriented at opposing angles with respect to a horizontal plane extending through the longitudinal axis.

    • A brake beam assembly for a railway car truck includes a brake beam mounted between opposed side frames of the railway car truck with opposite right hand and left hand ends. A strut is coupled to the brake beam and has opposite right hand and left hand ends coupled to the brake beam. Brake heads are coupled to the brake beam and struts proximate to the right hand and left hand ends thereof. Each brake head holds a brake shoe configured to engage a wheel of the railway car truck. Paddles extend from the brake heads. The paddles have distal ends configured to be received in wear liners in corresponding side frames of the railway car truck. A separation distance between the distal ends of the paddles is adjustable.

    • A railroad freight car brake beam with a strut having a pair of generally parallel and joined side walls disposed to opposite sides of an axis of the strut and having a central hollow portion along with a longitudinally elongated slot adapted to be inclined a predetermined number of degrees from vertical for accommodating an elongated brake lever extending through the strut. Each side wall of the strut defines a bore opening to the hollow center portion and to an exterior of the strut. The bores defined by the strut are aligned relative to each other to accommodate at least a lengthwise portion of a brake lever pivot pin extending through the strut and serving to connect the brake lever to the strut. The aligned bores in the strut also define a pivot axis for the brake lever. The strut further includes a pair of bushings which journal the brake lever pivot pin. One bushing is accommodated in each bore defined by the strut. Cooperating instrumentalities inhibit inadvertent displacement of the brake pin bushings away from the axis of and relative to the strut thereby fixing the pivot axis of the brake lever relative to the strut.
