    • A railroad freight car brake beam with a strut having a pair of generally parallel and joined side walls disposed to opposite sides of an axis of the strut and having a central hollow portion along with a longitudinally elongated slot adapted to be inclined a predetermined number of degrees from vertical for accommodating an elongated brake lever extending through the strut. Each side wall of the strut defines a bore opening to the hollow center portion and to an exterior of the strut. The bores defined by the strut are aligned relative to each other to accommodate at least a lengthwise portion of a brake lever pivot pin extending through the strut and serving to connect the brake lever to the strut. The aligned bores in the strut also define a pivot axis for the brake lever. The strut further includes a pair of bushings which journal the brake lever pivot pin. One bushing is accommodated in each bore defined by the strut. Cooperating instrumentalities inhibit inadvertent displacement of the brake pin bushings away from the axis of and relative to the strut thereby fixing the pivot axis of the brake lever relative to the strut.

    • A discharge gate assembly adapted to be secured in material receiving relation relative to a standard opening toward a bottom of a railroad hopper car. The gate assembly of the present invention satisfies AAR requirements and specifications and includes a rigid frame defining a ledgeless and generally square discharge opening which is sized substantially equivalent to the standard opening defined toward the bottom of the railcar whereby allowing commodity discharged from the opening in the railroad hopper car to pass through the gate assembly with minimum interference or obstruction thereby promoting the discharge of commodity from the railroad car. A gate is slidably movable between open and closed positions relative to the discharge opening on the gate assembly and is suspended, in a closed position, by a series of supports extending therebeneath.

    • A high bulk tissue web is made by depositing an aqueous suspension of papermaking fibers onto a forming fabric to form a web, drying the web, winding the dried web to form a plurality of large diameter parent rolls wound on a core, and transporting the parent rolls to an unwind stand having torque transmitting clamping means for engaging opposite end surfaces of the parent rolls. A backing plate is connected to and rotatable with an unwind shaft connected to an electric drive. An inflatable bladder is mounted on the backing plate. The clamping means engage a first parent roll by inflating the bladder such that the opposite end surfaces of the roll are sandwiched between the side clamping mechanisms for partially unwinding the first parent roll using a variable speed drive operably associated with the clamping means. The torque transmitting clamping means engage a second parent roll, and a leading end portion of the web on the second parent roll is joined to a trailing end portion of the partially unwound first parent roll to form a joined web without glue. In one aspect, the leading end portion of the web on the second parent roll is transported with a thread-up conveyor. In one aspect, the leading end portion of the web on the second parent roll is transported with vacuum means operably associated with an endless screen belt means with decreasing amounts of vacuum as the web is transported over the endless screen belt means.

Each capstan defines an axis about which the capstan rotates and has first and second axially aligned end portions. One end portion of each capstan is releasably connectable to one end of the operating shaft. The second end portion of each capstan defines a socket opening to a terminal end of the second end portion of the capstan. The socket defined at the free end of the second end portion of the capstan is axially aligned with the longitudinal axis of the capstan. An insert is configured for non-rotatable accommodation within the socket defined at the second end portion of each capstan. The insert defines a bore axially aligned with the longitudinal axis of the capstan and has a closed and non-circular marginal edge extending axially inward from the terminal end at the second end portion of the capstan. A locking apparatus positively secures the insert within the socket defined by the capstan so as to inhibit inadvertent separation of the insert from the capstan.
