A precharging apparatus for increasing the effective pressure in the supply container is provided, in which the precharging apparatus generates compressed air for increasing the pressure. According to the invention, the precharging apparatus includes a first precharging device, which generates the compressed air from exhaust gases of an exhaust system of the vehicle, and/or a second precharging device, which generates the compressed air from the relative wind.

    • An adaptation to a vehicle antilock braking system modulator to increase the initial displacement of the master cylinder, provide quicker system response and improved pedal feel. A solenoid assembly is added to the non fluid side of each of the low pressure accumulators in the ABS modulator. Upon the operator initiation of a brake apply, the solenoids are energized to immediately push upon the sump pistons and inject fluid from the low pressure accumulators into the brake system. This extra “shot” of fluid decreases the amount of fluid that the master cylinder delivers to the brake system. This improves pedal feel as it reduces the required initial pedal travel for a given brake system displacement. The low pressure accumulator pistons are spring balanced to ensure retention of fluid between brake applies and to allow normal ABS operation. During ABS operation, the low pressure accumulator displacer solenoids are de-energized to allow effective operation. The holding force (electrical current) of the displacer solenoids can be reduced by using a toggle linkage apply mechanism.

    • For a vehicle brake system having a brake pedal, a brake booster, a master brake cylinder and an electronically regulatable brake unit arranged between the master brake cylinder and the wheel brakes by which the brake pressure in the wheel brakes can be adjusted independently of the preliminary pressure existing at the output of the master brake cylinder using an electronic control unit, the electronic control unit senses the course of a pedal operating value which is achieved by the brake booster. The pedal operating value is directly proportional to the pedal force applied by the driver by way of the brake pedal. When a predetermined threshold value of the pedal operating value has been reached, the brake pressure in the wheel brakes is generated such that, in the deceleration course, a raised deceleration gradient occurs in the case of a further rise of the pedal operating value in the sense of an increase of the brake booster ratio.

    • To prevent difficulties in a brake system which is appropriate for automatic braking operations when the viscosity of the pressure fluid is high at low temperatures, a precharging pump for the pressure fluid supply during automatic braking is located so that it aspirates pressure fluid from the supply reservoir and delivers it into the brake line at a junction point as far from the master cylinder as possible. This junction point should be as close as possible to the suction side of the return pump. The large distance between the master cylinder and the point where the pressure line opens into the brake line makes it unnecessary to provide additional throttle elements in the brake line in order to reliably prevent pressure fluid from discharging into the supply reservoir. Only when the change-over valve on the suction side of the return pump is closed after an automatic braking operation has ended will it be necessary to reduce the residual pressure because the precharging pump continues running. This reduction in residual pressure takes place automatically in the brake system of the present invention because the pressure fluid connection to the master cylinder and, thus, to the supply reservoir is open.
