    • An HVAC comfort system operates in a cabin of a vehicle. A plurality of vehicle status parameters are measured including a cabin temperature and a seat occupancy configuration. The method detects whether the vehicle status parameters correspond to a predetermined override state. When the vehicle status parameters correspond to the predetermined override state, then a respective mandated setting is automatically activated. Unless prevented by the mandated setting, one of a plurality of HVAC modes is automatically selected in response to the cabin temperature and other inputs, wherein the HVAC modes include an extremity heating mode and a panel circulation mode. The extremity heating mode is comprised of automatic activation of a touchpoint heated surface and other outputs in response to the seat occupancy configuration. The panel circulation mode is comprised of automatic activation of one or more zones for convective cooling in response to the seat occupancy configuration and may include activating other cooling devices.

    • A steering wheel heating system (10) includes a modular controller (18) electrically connected to a heating element (12) and temperature sensor (20) disposed beneath the surface of a rim portion (14) of a steering wheel (16). Controller (18) includes a cabin temperature sensor (26), a remote control receiver (30), a temperature adjustment control (34), and an on/off/reset switch (36). Steering wheel heating system (10) receives electric current from power system (42) and allows this current to pass through heating element (12) to heat steering wheel (16). Controller (18) controls the flow of current to heating element (12) using control inputs from one or more of steering wheel temperature sensor (20), cabin temperature sensor (26), temperature adjustment control (34), and vehicle climate control system (44). A timing module automatically shuts off the flow of current after a predetermined period of time. Flow of electrical current to heating element (12) can be initiated by remote control receiver (72) or on/off/reset switch (50).

    • A steering wheel includes a central portion connected to the steering column for rotation about an axis, and a rim extending around the central portion. A steering wheel includes a passageway extending through portions of the steering wheel. A plurality of spaced apart rings are disposed on the rim, and a plurality of N-type and P-type thermoelectric (“TE”) elements are disposed on the rings. The thermoelectric elements may comprise Peltier devices in the form of relatively thin plate-like units having generally planar opposite surfaces, and rectangular perimeters. An electrical conductor interconnects the P-type and N-type elements in series. The steering wheel includes first and second thermal conductors thermally connected to inner and outer surfaces of the thermoelectric elements. An air circulation device moves air through the passageway to cool the rim of the steering wheel.

    • An operating element in a motor vehicle having a hollow gripping section which can be gripped by an occupant, is arranged above the leg space of the motor vehicle and is provided in a ventilatable manner with air outlet openings to which air is guided through an air guiding duct which flows through air outlet openings into the occupant compartment. The air guiding duct starts in the leg space of the occupant compartment, and, from the gripping section heated by the effect of the sun, warmer air can flow off through the air outlet openings into the occupant compartment. By way of the air guiding duct, cooler air from the leg space is taken into the gripping suction.
