    • The present invention provides a suspension link assembly for use in interconnecting a suspension member to frame structure in a motor vehicle, and which finds particular application in rear independent suspension systems. The suspension link assembly includes an elongated extension rail and a tie rod assembly. The extension rail is a stamped component defining a generally U-shaped cross-section. The extension rail has a first end adapted to be pivotably connected to the frame structure and a second end defining an open-ended socket. The tie rod assembly includes a housing defining an annular cavity and a shank, and ball joint retained in the housing cavity and adapted for pivotable connection to the suspension member. The shank of the tie rod housing is slidably inserted into the socket of the extension rail. Once the desired length of the suspension link assembly is determined, the shank is rigidly secured in the socket, such as by a welding operation.

    • A rear suspension system for automobiles, comprising: a trailing arm pivoted to the automobile body at its front end and to a knuckle at its rear end; a first and a second lateral links extending laterally across an upper portion and a lower portion of the knuckle and the corresponding locations of the automobile body, respectively; and a third lateral link extending laterally across an intermediate position of the knuckle, located between the upper portion and the lower portion of the knuckle and behind a central axial line of a wheel axle of the knuckle, and the corresponding location of the automobile body. Thus, the mounting positions of the lower end of the shock absorber can be lowered, and the resistance against the changes in the toe angle and the camber angle is increased. If the first lateral link is shorter than the second lateral link, the camber angle of the outer wheel of a vehicle making a turn can become negative so as to improve the cornering limit of the automobile.

A pivot axis between the universal joint on the side of the support arm and the support joint intersects the line of action of a vertical force engaging at the point of contact of the wheel. A connecting line between the universal joint of the support arm on the side of the body and the force line of action of a coil spring arranged on the support arm also extends through this point of intersection. The shock absorber strut is to be kept free of transverse forces by this construction.

In the above-mentioned strut type suspension for automobiles, which is provided with an internally expansible drum brake unit in a wheel, a support base to which an anchor block is fixed is formed on an inner side surface of a back plate of the drum brake unit so as to project inward therefrom, and a recess defined in an outer side surface of the back plate so as to deflect toward the projecting support base. An outer end fixing portion of the lower control arm, which is joined to the support member, is set in the recess so as to be close to the center line of ground contact of the wheel.
