The second pair of nip rolls is mounted on a pivoted arm so that they are movable toward, and away from said first nip rolls. 摘要： An easy open flexible bag preferably containing one or more stacks of flexible articles which are maintained in a state of compression in a direction substantially parallel to their thickness. For products such as disposable absorbent baby diapers, catamenial pads, incontinent briefs and the like, the degree of compression within the bag may be as much as 50% or more when compared to the uncompressed thickness of the stack of articles in question. In a particularly preferred embodiment, the bag totally encloses the stack or stacks of compressed flexible articles and exhibits a substantially rectilinear shape. The bag preferably includesa longitudinally oriented carrying handle which is formed indepenently of the bag. The opposed ends of the carrying handle are preferably secured to bag's side panels. The side panels and the front and back panels of the bag are subject to tension imposed by the stack of compressed flexible articles. A predetermined line of weakness spanning a tensioned side wall of the bag is provided and functions as an easy opening system. The easy opening system is so positioned on the side panel of the bag that when the package is opened, the carrying handle remains attached to the bag and fully functional. The easy opening system allows the compressive forces acting upon the flexible articles contained in the bag to be partially relaxed when the easy open feature is activated by the end user. Partial separation or complete removal of a portion of the tensioned side panel of the bag allows the coinciding portion of the stack of compressed articles to project in fan-like array through the aperture thus created to permit easy one-at-a-time removal.

The preferred method includes the steps of: (a) providing at least two discrete portions of a continuous line of weakness in a web of flexible material; (b) forming a "W"-shaped cross-section in the web; (c) feeding a web of the material forming the handle parallel to the web of bag material; (d) nesting the web of handle material within the web of "W"-shaped material; (e) sealing the nested webs to one another forming unerected flexible bags; (f) severing the discrete unerected flexible bags from the web in the sealed areas of the web; (g) partially erecting each flexible bag; (h) forming a stack of flexible articles; (i) compressing the stack of flexible articles between a pair of opposed knife belt assemblies; (j) moving the knife belt assemblies and the partially erected bags relative to one another so that the knife belt assemblies pass into the partially erected bags; (k) simultaneously driving the opposed knife belts in a direction which advances the stack of compressed articles into the partially erected flexible bag; (l) moving the knife belt assemblies and the partially erected flexible bags relative to one another so that the knife belt assemblies are completely retracted from each of the flexible bags; (m) folding the open bottom end of each bag to form a closed bottom panel; and (n) securing the bottom panel in a closed position to complete the bag.

The bag forms one of a plurality of bags formed on a continuous web of thermoplastic material. The bag includes a hem defining a channel wherein the draw tape is disposed. The section of the bag which includes the hem and the tape thus includes a plurality of layers of thermoplastic material. The apparatus comprises a conveyor for continuously moving the web; a first sealing station for forming a heat seal through at least two of the layers of the hem and tape, the seal being formed on a first side of the bag; and a second sealing station for forming a heat seal through the rest of the layers of the hem and tape at the sealing section on a second side of the bag. The first and second sealing stations form the seals while the web is continuously moved by the conveyor.

An edge folding unit, a notching unit, a tape inserting unit, a heat sealing unit and a web folding unit form a compact continuous line in a rectangular path. The hem folder includes a L-shaped plate within the hem to receive a draw tape. The plate is pivotally mounted the tape within the hem. A wheel is rotatably and pivotally mounted for pulling the hem onto the plate. A single strap on a roll has a width equal to both tapes. The roll is driven and the strap passes over a knife to sever the strap from the tapes. A tension control roll is coupled to moving the strap and controls the strap feed to hold a constant tape tension. A folding board includes spaced edge channels in a V-shape for folding the flat web. An air layer is interposed between the web and the folding channels to provide a low friction movement. A bag making machine includes a presealer to form tape edge seals, a cooler for cooling the tape hems and an edge sealer and cutting unit to form the side edges of the bag.

摘要： A method and apparatus for forming draw tape bags wherein the bag material moves continuously during the manufacture, except for the last step. The apparatus may be used with an in-line system wherein a tube is extruded and a side gusset is formed to create a hem; or the apparatus may be used with an off-line system wherein folded bag material is used, and a continuous hemmer is provided to turn the loose edges. In the off-line system a constant tension dancer precedes the hemmer to maintain constant tension on the web regardless of the size of the supply roll. The web continues to move, and a cutter is actuated to move through a circle and engage the web to punch finger holes in the hem. A reel of a strip of material is continuously fed, the strip being slit longitudinally to provide the draw tapes which are inserted into the hems. A tape guide tensions the tape and assures that the tape is well within the hem, the hems are sealed, and the bags are side welded.

The bags are side sealed with perforations between bags for separation of the bags, and the hems containing the draw tapes are side welded so that the hemmed areas are substantially separated. The bag machine for making side sealed bags includes a side welding unit in line with the sealing unit so the sealing and perforating, and welding, are accomplished in one step. The side welding knife has a large radius and high temperature to effect a weld in the multiple layers and the thick draw tape.
