    • A scrap shearing machine includes a straight-blade shear-stand, an open-wide feed channel, a side hydraulic ram for squashing a metal scrap sideways in the feed channel, and a feeder for feeding the squashed metal scrap into the mouth of the shear-stand. In order to squash a long-rigid metal scrap by relatively small drive force, the side ram is adapted to squash the scrap sideways only at a certain limited section which is shorter than the overall length of the scrap in the longitudinal direction of the feed channel. A downward hydraulic ram is associated with the side ram and is adapted to downwardly squash the scrap only at the limited section prior to squashing operation of the side ram. A control unit controls the respective drive systems of the shear-stand, the feeder, the side ram, and the downward ram, in a predetermined operation sequence.

    • A shear system for processing scrap is provided that includes guiding and catching walls for enhancing the loading of large items into the shear system. A tiltable hopper is provided with an open rear so that very large and long scrap items may be processed. The hopper is tiltable so that scrap items may be loaded with relatively smaller apparatus. The system operates to precrush the scrap material taking advantage of leverage yielded by using pivoting wing and flap crushing surfaces. Crushing forces are essentially relieved prior to shearing to decrease the likelihood of jamming of the shear head. The system is modular and may be shipped to and erected in remote locations where electric power for operating the system is not available. The system includes an enclosed and protected area for the power plant and control station.

    • To compact such scrap materials as relatively comminuted chip, waste, and the like, an apparatus is provided which comprises a vertically extending briguetting machine, upstream whereof there is provided at least one horizontal pre-compression device. The briquetting machine has a portal-like configuration and a vertical compacting ram arranged to penetrate a side intake feed chamber and a vertical axis die. A closure anvil is movable under the die. The die is mounted with a small clearance in the die holder and has an indentation along one generatrix of the outer surface. Thus, the die will be ruptured along the generatrix line during the compression stroke. This does not jeopardize functionality but rather makes die replacement easier. The vertical arrangement eliminates eccentric wear as due to the weight of the horizontally moving elements of known briquetting machines, and facilitates the intaking of the pre-compressed material.

    • The fuel assembly skeleton compaction system provides a means for remotely dismantling an irradiated nuclear fuel assembly skeleton once the nuclear fuel rods have been removed therefrom while the skeleton remains submerged in a coolant. The system comprises a feed chamber for holding the spent fuel assembly skeleton and for feeding a spent fuel assembly skeleton into a shear chamber which is arranged near the feed chamber. The shear chamber contains a shearing device for shearing the skeleton into small pieces and for moving the pieces of the skeleton into a compaction chamber which is located adjacent to the shear chamber. The compaction chamber contains a compaction cylinder for compacting the pieces of the skeleton introduced thereinto. A storage canister is located below the compaction chamber such that when the slide of the compaction chamber is opened, the compacted pieces of the skeleton may be pushed into the storage canister. When the storage canister is filled, it may be remotely removed and replaced with an empty canister.

    • An apparatus for cutting a scrapped good such as a scrapped automobile. The apparatus has a machine frame having a table provided with a recess, and a bifurcated pressing member rotatable into and out of the recess by means of a pressing cylinder. The pressing member has a lifting portion and a cutting portion provided at its both side with cutting edges for co-operation with cutting edges formed at both sides of the recess. As the pressing cylinder is energized, the pressing member is rotated into the recess to cut and press the scrap into tabular form. The pressed tabular scrap is then lifted by the returning rotation of the pressing member to the level of the table surface, and is discharged to the out of the apparatus by means of a pay-off device mounted on the machine frame.
