    • Horizontal fuel element bundle shears have a stepped blade and a horizontalagazine for accommodating an undismantled uclear reactor fuel element which is to be cut up. In the fuel element bundle shears, the nuclear reactor fuel element, for the cutting operation to be performed, is pushed with a stepwise movement through a magazine opening in front of which the stepped blade is displaceable in a direction perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the fuel element. Each portion of the stepped blade has a cutting edge. In order to achieve a lower rate of wear of the stepped blade while at the same time obtaining a good cut and a low cutting force, the stepped blade has two cutting edges which are separated from each other by a step, thereby forming two blade portions which are in superposed relationship with each other. The lower blade portion is set back with its cutting edge relative to the cutting edge of the upper blade portion by a step distance which corresponds at least to the width of the precompacted fuel element bundle. The upper cutting edge is higher or longer than the lower cutting edge. Because of this configuration, the two blade portions, which are separated by a step, do not come into engagement with the bundle simultaneously but instead engage the bundle sequentially.

    • In a reconstitutable fuel assembly, a top nozzle attaching structure for mounting the top nozzle adapter plate in releasable locking engagement upon the guide thimble upper end portions includes several improved features. First, each locking tube is mounted within the guide thimble upper end portion for movement between an upper locking position wherein the adapter plate and guide thimble upper end portion are maintained in locking engagement and a lower unlocking position wherein the adapter plate is releasable from the guide thimble upper end portion. Also, cooperating means are defined on the locking tube and the guide thimble for retaining the locking tube at either of its upper or lower positions. The guide thimble cooperating means includes a pair of upper and lower circumferential bulges defined on the guide thimble upper end portion below the adapter plate. The bulges are axially spaced from one another such that the upper bulge is located to retain the locking tube at its upper locking position and the lower bulge is located to retain the locking tube at its lower unlocking position. The locking tube cooperating means includes a circumferential bulge defined on a lower portion of the locking tube which is seatable in either of the bulges of the guide thimble and several slots defined in the locking tube which extend upward along its lower portion from a lower edge thereof. The slots allow radial compression and expansion of the lower portion of the locking tube for facilitating its movement between and positioning at its upper and lower positions.

    • Method intended to form a more or less compact bundle of flexible and oblong objects of reduced cross-section dimensions, such as fuel rods of a nuclear reactor, said objects forming, prior to compacting, an assembly wherein they occupy transversally spaced, parallel positions. According to the invention, this method is characterized in that there is arranged, in a generally vertical direction, a plurality of guiding tubes (2) of which the upper ends (2a) are arranged according to the initial disposition of said object assembly, and of which the lower ends (2b) are arranged according to the desired disposition, the dimension of said guiding tubes (2) being such that in each of them one of said objects may slide by means of gravity, and in that said assembly of objects is brought vertically on top of the plurality of guiding tubes, whereafter each object is introduced by its lower end in the upper end of one of said guiding tubes (2), allowing the assembly of said objects to slide downwardly.

    • A fixture for inserting and removing locking tubes into and from locking positions in a top nozzle includes a lower traveling plate and an upper traveling plate disposed above the lower plate. The lower plate has hollow flexure tubes attached to and projecting downwardly therefrom. Each flexure tube has an axially segmented sleeve portion which terminates in a lower segmented rim, with the rim being expandable to a first outside diameter greater than an inside diameter of the locking tube and collapsible to a second outside diameter less than the inside diameter of the locking tube. The upper plate has actuating rods attached to and projecting downwardly therefrom through the flexure tubes. Each actuating rod has a shaft portion which terminates in a lower enlarged nose disposed below the segmented rim of one flexure tube such that movement of the plates away from one another forcibly inserts each enlarged nose into one segmented rim sufficiently to expand the same to its first outside diameter size wherein the segmented rim will engage the lower end of each locking tube, whereas movement of the plates toward one another withdraws each enlarged nose from each segmented rim sufficiently to allow contraction of the same to its second outside diameter size wherein the segmented rim will fit through the locking tube.
