    • A hydraulic compactor system includes a portable container adapted to be transported by a truck and having a chamber for receiving a waste material to be compacted. The container has a self-contained compacting ram actuated by a hydraulic cylinder, and a remote hydraulic power supply unit is connected to the hydraulic cylinder by flexible hydraulic hoses. Each of the hoses is provided with a breakaway hydraulic coupling having two sections connected by tension releasable coupling means with the sections having spring biased valves which are open when the sections are coupled together and automatically close when the sections separate due to a predetermined tension force on the hoses. Each breakaway coupling compensates for increases in hydraulic fluid pressure to prevent separation of the coupling sections when the fluid pressure increases to actuate the hydraulic compacting cylinder.

    • A refuse bin comprises a refuse container (10) having a top opening (12) and a lid (14) hinged relative to the container to cover the opening. A compacting mechanism is fitted to the lid and comprises a compacting plate (22) mounted under the lid and an actuating rod (24) coupled to the compacting plate through an aperture (26) in the lid. The coupling is such that the rod (24) may be maneuvered from a storage position wherein the rod lies across the top surface of the lid and the plate is drawn up under the lid to an operative position wherein the rod stands upright over the aperture in the lid and may be pushed downwardly through the aperture to push the plate down into the container. The compacting mechanism further comprises a ratchet mechanism (50, 52, 54) for releasably locking the actuating rod (24) against movement upwardly through the aperture in the lid such that refuse in the container can be compacted by force applied to an edge (48) of the lid opposite the hinge.

    • A trash compactor for use within the box of an automotive garbage truck, comprising: (a) a pair of conveyors arranged in a V-shape laid on its side, the first conveyor being horizontal and supporting and moving a trash load from a trash loading area, through a trash compacting area, to a compacted trash unloading area, the second conveyor being inclined upwardly. A plurality of crushing plates are axially carried by rotatable shafts transversely of each conveyor, for crushing trash at the trash compacting area which is at the apex of the conveyors V-trough. The top run of the second conveyor transfers compacted trash from the compacted trash unloading area to a trash storage area within the box; wherein compacted trash will by evenly distributed within the box trash storage area of the garbage truck, for efficient use of available space.

    • A compacting apparatus for recyclable waste materials is particularly adapted to be mounted on a recycling collection vehicle to allow the additional collection of large volume recyclable containers, such as large plastic beverage bottles and the like. The compactor apparatus occupies a very small total volume, but provides a highly efficient compaction of the recyclable materials thereby allowing it to be added to existing vehicles without significantly increasing the overall size. The appartus utilizes a flow-through arrangement including an inlet hopper on one end of the housing and a serially connected payload chamber having an outlet on the opposite end of the housing. A hopper platen is rotatably mounted on one end of a slide panel for sequential rotary and linear movement to sweep uncompacted materials from the hopper and compact them into the payload chamber. A load ejection panel is rotatably mounted in the payload chamber to cooperate with the slide panel in one position to establish the front wall of the chamber and to rotate to a second position to eject the compacted mass through a rear door in the housing. The payload chamber has a unique forwardly divergent interior shape to help prevent reverse movement of compacted material from the payload chamber back into the hopper. The rear ejection door in the housing is preferably connected with a direct mechanical link to the load ejection panel so that the two operate in unison for load discharge, thereby eliminating the potential problem of the rear door inadvertently springing open under the pressure of the compacted material.
