    • An apparatus for removing liquid from a composite mixture of liquid and solids comprising a hopper 16 mounted atop a compactor ram assembly 10, having a snout section 12 and an extruder section 14 mounted in a generally axial direction to the compactor ram assembly 10. Wet waste material is loaded into the hopper 16 and falls onto a loading floor 158. A hydraulically operated ram 208 compresses the wet material into the snout and extruder sections 12, 14. Under pressure from the ram 208, liquid in the waste material escapes from numerous drainage slots 25 in the loading floor, the snout section top, bottom and sides 24, 22, 20, and the extruder section top, bottom and sides 30, 28, 26. A platen 80, pivotally mounted to the extruder top plate 30 near the exit of the device and biased with a constant pressure, controls the back pressure in the extruder and snout sections 14, 12. A first embodiment has a converging extruder section 14, having a narrower cross section at the exit of the section, which aids in compacting the material being dewatered. A second embodiment has a slightly diverging extruder section to prevent impaction of dewater material inside the device when operating with certain composite mixtures such as paper pulp.

    • A refuse compacting device has dewatering capability and in some cases refuse transporting capability wherein refuse is fed into an outer cylinder in which an axially elongate piston is arranged. The piston is capable of reciprocating motion by a drive motor and threadable piston rod and nut arrangement, whereby refuse is forced towards an outlet of the cylinder. The cylinder is provided with apertures for allowing water to escape from the wet refuse as it is compacted against a conically shaped throttling member at the outlet of the cylinder.

    • A process is proposed for the dewatering of compressibly dewaterable materials, in particular waste from the processing of paper material, which enables a very high degree of dewatering so that the waste can be readily disposed of, e.g. dumped. For this purpose, the material to be dewatered is initially pre-dewatered by gravity, and usually also by compression, in a transportation section (5). This pre-dewatering can take place in a continually operating feed section (7) through a perforated sieve jacket (10). The material then reaches a press section (6) in which a discontinuously working pressing device is in operation. Further improvements in the dewatering performance are possible by various embodiments of the corresponding pressing elements (13,14). The invention relates to both the process and the device for implemention of the process.

    • A device for compacting and dewatering moist refuse comprises a tube and a piston reciprocable therein. Varying consistency of the refuse matter will require a varying resistance to the compacting action of the piston. A throttling device within the tube comprises a number of plates which are swingable about an axis arranged perpendicularly to the tube, and are actuable so as to occupy a position practically level with the wall of the tube, or to a position in which they extend into the tube, respectively. The piston is operated by a double acting hydraulic ram, and the plates are operated by a further hydraulic ram. Both rams are connected to a source of pressure fluid, and are interconnected so the power stroke end of the further ram communicates with the return flow end of the piston ram, and vice versa. Two oppositely directed non-return valves are fitted in parallel in the conduit connecting the power stroke end of the further ram with the return flow end of the piston ram.

    • Systems and processes for extracting liquids and solids from waste include separately extracting liquids via spaced plates and solid waste out an exit port with an operably counter-pressured pressure cone. The system and process use a cylinder for accepting waste and a piston for providing pressure and pushing waste through the cylinder. Spaced plates with internal apertures are aligned with the cylinder, and pressure from the piston on waste in the apertures forces liquids to pass between the spaced plates. Solid waste egresses via an exit port aligned with the apertures when pressure on a pressure cone operably connected with the exit port exceeds the force keeping the pressure cone closed on the exit port.

    • The extrusion of a green body from a paste or suspension of particulate solids in a liquid is conducted by a process which includes the steps of introducing flowable paste or suspension into an inlet end of a moulding passage which is defined by walls having at least one partially liquid-permeable wall section; applying pressure to the paste or suspension, thereby to remove from the passage at least a major portion of the liquid of the paste or suspension, by establishing a pressure differential across the liquid permeable section, so as to form in the passage a non-flowable body of consolidated particulate solids of the paste or suspension, and to extrude the non-flowable body progressively from an outlet end of the passage. The magnitude of the pressure, the rate of removal of liquid and the rate of extrusion are controlled to maintain the non-flowable body at a length which extends back from the outlet end of the passage and across and beyond the liquid-permeable wall section to provide a portion of the body upstream of the liquid-permeable wall section. Liquid is removed from the passage by constant pressure filtration in which liquid being forced from the suspension is filtered through the portion of the non-flowable body maintained upstream of the liquid permeable section.

    • The material compactor in accordance with the present invention generally includes a feed apparatus, a preliminary compaction apparatus, and a final compaction apparatus. The final compaction apparatus generally includes a compaction chamber having an adjustably taperable choke tube. The area of the inner cavity of the final compaction chamber can be tapered to become measurably smaller or larger at the discharge or expelling end. Consequently, compacting movement of the material within the compaction chamber and through the tapered choke tube significantly subjects the material to restrictive compacting pressure which in turn compacts the material and performs liquid separation with each operationally continuous movement through the final compaction apparatus.
