    • Retention of position and clamping of components is ideally performed with an engagement arrangement which is reconfigurable. Magnetorheological (MR) fluids have been utilised for reconfigurable engagement arrangements but typically require powerful electromagnets to activate the MR fluid. By providing enclosed chambers with a constriction in the form of a passage between a reservoir portion of the chamber and an engagement portion of the chamber it is possible to utilise smaller permanent magnets acting upon a smaller volume of MR fluid in the passage. In such circumstances initial positioning of engagement elements is provided through forced displacement in the form of a plunger or pin and then retention of the engagement element position achieved through positioning a magnetic field across and about a passage to create an effective block retaining MR fluid volume and therefore presentation of the engagement element. In order to achieve such performance MR fluids which have an appropriate performance and durability are necessary. In such circumstances in accordance with other aspects of the present invention particular magnetorheological fluids are also described.

    • A vice has a pair of parallel, work-piece clamping jaw-members, which jaw-members are spaced laterally apart. The first jaw-member is a semi-rigid one, while the second jaw-member is completely slidable as an integral unit, and also allows for the two jaw-elements thereof of which it is comprised to be movable toward and away from each, whereby the second jaw-member may be used separately to hold a workpiece, and may be used in conjunction with the first jaw-member for assisting the first jaw-member in firmly and safely clamping a workpiece in order to provide a more stable holding of the workpiece during the working thereof. The second, floating jaw-member may be adjusted for holding the smaller-diameter portion of a long workpiece, while the fixed jaw-member holds and clamps the larger diameter portion of the same workpiece. The second workpiece may be used alone for holding and clamping workpieces that are more difficult to grip, or the like, and also may be used for holding a tool, or similar article, while the first, semi-rigid jaw-member clamps a workpiece associated with the tool being clamped by the floating jaw-member.

    • An integral workbench having a table top formed as an integral vise including integral vise jaws and clamping elements which are longitudinally and angularly adjustable to vary the angle of clamping and selectively adjustable to vary the shape of the clamping surface. Either vise jaw has a pair of spaced apart openings formed therein longitudinally thereof and the other vise jaw has one such opening formed therein. Each opening has a substantially straight edge portion and a plurality of longitudinally-spaced cut-outs formed therein opposite to the straight edge portion. A clamping element is associated with each opening such that at least three clamping elements are provided. Each clamping element has a top portion that rests on the jaw and a shank portion that extends through the opening and is adapted to be selectively received within one of the cut-outs, providing longitudinal adjustability. The elements may rotate about the axis of the shank, providing angular adjustability. The top portion of each clamping element has at least one arcuate and at least one straight edge clamping surface formed thereon. By rotation of the element about their axis, the clamping surfaces may be adapted to be selectively clamped against the workpiece so that the shape of the clamping surface may be varied to conform with the shape of the surface of the workpiece to be clamped.
