The push rod used with the pressing and stripping apparatus for the punch die is a column, one end thereof is a polygonal blind hole, and the other end thereof is a stepped shaft with parallel threads.     • A press for forming the relatively long cylindrical body of a so-called two piece beverage can utilizes a horizontally reciprocating ram to drive a relatively short cup through a circular die pack. Compressed air applied through a rotary valve is utilized to strip the bodies from the ram. Such valve includes a continuously rotating rotor that is mechanically connected to the drive for the ram such that for each rotor revolution the ram moves through a complete cycle consisting of a forward working stroke followed by a rearward return stroke. The rotor is constructed of two disks that abut face to face. A rotor drive shaft extends through the center of the rotor and the angular position of the disks relative to each other is adjustable to adjust the portion of each rotor revolution during which compressed air is applied for stripping. Each disk is provided with an arcuate aperture and the extent to which these apertures overlap determines how long compressed air is applied for stripping. The angular position of the rotor on the drive shaft determines when compressed air is applied for stripping.

    • Apparatus for removing a drawn container from a draw horn which is carried by the inner slide of a double acting press includes a stripper assembly also carried by the inner slide and capable of controlled axial movement relatively of the draw horn. The draw horn and draw riser have coaxial, centrally disposed bores within which is received an elongate shaft of the stripper assembly. The distal end of the shaft carries a stripper pad while the proximal end is adjustably connected to a pivoting linkage mounted on the inner slide and normally pivoted under pressure by a pneumatically actuated piston so as to maintain the stripper assembly in retracted condition, the pad then forming the bottom of the horn. The method includes timing the press so that, upon movement of the inner and outer slides away from the bottom platen of the press, the inner slide trails the outer slide by a predetermined amount so that the outer slide comes into contact with one end of the pivoting linkage of the stripper assembly thereby overcoming the piston and enabling the stripper pad to be disposed in an axially extended position with respect to the draw horn. As the inner and outer slides continue to move away from the lower platen, the stripper pad, which is in contact with the bottom of the drawn container, effectively holds the container while the horn is pulled out of it. Final removal may be assisted by air pressure.

    • Elongated closed bottom shells (cans) are produced in the preferred manner by a double-acting punch body arranged on a horizontal axis and reciprocated between opposed die stations at a substantially constant velocity by a hydraulic force alternately applied to opposite sides of a ram on the punch body; blanks (of cup form) are fed to the die stations at times when the punch body dwells at the end of a stroke. Preferably the applied force is such that punch body attains peak (maximum) velocity before the punch encounters a cup centered at the die station; cup feed, cup positioning, punch body travel and formation of a shell of correct length are monitored (sensed) and in the event a programmed condition of machine function or production criterion is sensed as not satisfied, the machine is stopped.During the return stroke of the punch body, after a shell is formed at one station, fluid under pressure is applied by a unique porting arrangement to a separable part of the punch, which thereby serves as a stripper to hold the completed shell stationary at the die station while the remainder of the punch body is retracted from the shell; concurrently, air under pressure is ported in a unique fashion to break any vacuum inside of the shell. After the shell is stripped, the stripper is retracted at an accelerated rate to re-couple with the punch body as it moves toward the other die station.The main cylinder is so supported that thermal effects will not disturb the alignment of the punch body relative to the dies.

    • In a puncher, with respect to a cylindrical cover with a one-end opening hole, a piercing punch is loosely but not movably inserted. A tip end surface of the piercing punch is protruded out from the one-end opening hole of the cover. A cylindrical stripper provided between the cover and the piercing punch is provided detachably from the one-end opening hole. By a biasing member, the stripper is protruded out from the one-end opening hole more than the piercing punch does. When the stripper is pressed in against biasing force of the biasing member, the tip end surface of the piercing punch becomes to protrude out from a through-hole formed at a protruding end of the stripper. A removal-prevention member which prevents the stripper from removing from the cover is provided detachably with respect to the cover.
