    • A guide for a high speed steel rolling mill comprises two rolling members, between which the work product passes mounted for rotation on a base member. Each roller has a frusto-conically shaped bearing recess formed therein and each guide roller is mounted on a mating, frusto-conically shaped projection which protrudes from the base member. Each of the projections has a central oil duct which serves to feed a lubricating oil under pressure into the frusto-conically shaped space between the roller and its mating projection. The lubricating oil serves to form a film between the stationary projection and the rotating guide roller. Because of the conically shaped mating surface, the lubricating oil tends to “lift” the guide roller from the surface of the supporting base. Each rolling member is provided with a vane structure to permit the rolling member to be prespun by the impingement of a cooling fluid on the vane surface thereof.

    • A rolling mill system for the continuous rolling of metal strip or strand into a strip of predetermined thickness and straightness is disclosed. The system includes a frame in which two metal working rolls are mounted in such a way that both the distance or nip between the rolls and the tilt of one roll with respect to the other may be regulated by two gap adjusting devices mounted in the roll frame on opposite sides of the centerline of the metal strip. At least one of the gap adjusting devices is operated responsive to a signal representing a measurement of the straightness of the strip product. The gap adjusting devices are hydraulic assemblies wherein each piston is affixed to a piston rod and each piston rod is affixed at its opposite end to a chock block in which the movable roll is carried. A position indicating rod which constitutes part of a position transducer is affixed to the opposite face of each piston to allow for monitoring of the actual distance between the two rolls at each end thereof. The motor drive from one roll is mounted on a door forming part of the roll mill frame to allow for free access to the rolls and chocks. The straightness or camber of the strip product is monitored and the tilt of the movable roll with respect to the other roll is controlled responsive to signals representative of variations in camber.

    • A sealing arrangement for sealing a stationary member to a rotatable member wherein a neck of the rotatable member is coaxially received in a sleeve secured for rotation therewith and the sleeve is journaled for rotation in the stationary member. An extension ring is annularly secured to one end of the sleeve with a normally flat annular thrower seal of elastomeric material annularly engaged between this extension ring and the one end of the sleeve to provide a seal therebetween with inner and outer annular peripheral portions of the thrower seal radially protruding. The inner peripheral portion of the thrower seal annularly engages the neck of the rotatable member under elastic deformation to provide an annular static seal and a peripheral side face of the outer peripheral portion of the thrower seal annularly engages an annular seal rubbing surface of the stationary member under elastic deformation to provide an annular rubbing seal therebetween. A second annular rubbing seal may be positioned between the stationary member and the aforesaid extension ring to provide a second rubbing seal therebetween, with the second rubbing seal and the aforesaid thrower seal being relatively closely spaced to form an annular and continuous seal passage therebetween. This second rubbing seal may take on a configuration similar to that of the thrower seal, and drain passages are provided in the annular and continuous seal passage between the two seals.

    • This invention is concerned with improved bearings for rolls of a rolling mill. According to the invention a pair of opposed rolls are supported in vertically adjustable hydrostatic bearing assemblies for resisting the vertical rolling force and separate means are provided to contain the horizontal forces. The hydrostatic bearing assemblies surround less than half the circumference of the roll barrels so that they can accommodate different sizes of rolls and do not need to be changed each time the rolls are changed or reground.
