    • A gauge control apparatus reduces deviation of an actual plate thickness from a target plate thickness on the delivery side of a rolling mill, in all speed ranges, and produces good products by controlling plate thickness considering changes in the oil film thickness of oil film bearings of backup rolls and the deformation resistance of a rolled material with respect to rolling speeds. The gauge control apparatus computes an oil film thickness compensation value to compensate for increase and decrease of the gap resulting from a change in thickness of the oil film bearing attributable to rolling speeds, an acceleration compensation value to compensate for increase and decrease of plate thickness on the delivery side of the rolling mill resulting from a change in deformation resistance of the rolled material attributable to rolling speeds, and deviation of the predicted plate thickness from the target plate thickness, in consideration of the computed compensation values.

    • A system is disclosed for use in a rolling mill oil film bearing to remove oil exiting from between a rotating sleeve and a fixed bushing surrounding the sleeve. The system comprises an annular chamber arranged to receive the exiting flow of oil. The chamber is isolated from a drainage sump by confinement surfaces including a seal interface defined by a flexible seal in contact with an adjacent rigid component of the bearing. Impellers project into the chamber and are rotable with and at the velocity of the sleeve to rotatively propel oil around the chamber. A discharge conduit communicates tangentially with the chamber and is arranged to receive a pressurized flow of the oil being rotatively propelled around the chamber. A venturi is located in the discharge conduit. A suction conduit connects the venturi to the drainage sump. Oil escaping from the annular chamber past the seal interface into the drainage sump is aspirated by the venturi for removal via the conduit.

    • The invention relates to a device (1) for sealing the ball side of a bearing of a roller journal (2), comprising a journal bushing (3) which is drawn to the roller journal (2), said journal bushing being associated with a bearing ring (5), a bearing bushing (7) which is mounted in an insertion piece (6), also comprising radial shaft seals which are associated with the insertion piece via a holder (11) and which are provided with radial lips (13, 13) which co-operate with the bearing ring (5) and a sealing arrangement (16) which is arranged upstream from the radial shaft seals so that the roller (4) can roll. The aim of the invention is to improve said device in such a way that it can be produced and operated economically such that it consists of only a small number of parts and has an improved sealing effect. According to the invention, the holder (11), the radial lips (13, 13), and a sealing lip (15, 15′) of the sealing arrangement (16) form one unit which is sealingly connected in a detachable manner to the insertion piece (6).
