    • A vertically symmetrical mechanical stirrer adapted for submersion in a metallurgical melt includes an entrance canal in the bottom of the stirrer and at least two discharge canals in communication with the entrance canal. The community or common zone of the entrance canal and the discharge canals defines an inner mixing and degassing chamber. The entrance canal has a length which is not more than twice its inner diameter; the discharge canals have a length at least twice their average inner diameter and inner diameter of which uniformly diminish in the direction of flow from the mixing chamber to the point of discharge. The discharge canals are inclined upwardly at an angle from the horizontal of at least 10.degree.. The distance between the lowest points at the entrances to the discharge canals proximate to the mixing chamber is at least 20 percent greater than the inner diameter of the entrance canal.The exterior surfaces of the stirrer constituting a vertically symmetrical upper surface above the discharge points of the said discharge canals, and a lower surface, also vertically symmetrical, below the said points, are effectively congruent with annular torus eddies formed in the melt by the stirrer.

    • The invention relates to an apparatus for the treatment of contaminated media, comprising a rotatable housing having at least one inlet (28) for gas emerging in the stirrer housing, and at least one suction opening (10; 32) for the medium to be treated. The housing is provided with a plurality of outlet openings (25; 27) arranged along its periphery. A plurality of vanes (22; 23) are arranged in the outlet openings (25; 27). A rotation transferring means (24) is provided to transfer a rotational movement to the stirrer. A method according to the invention comprises generating a vortex in the medium in such a way that an under-pressure occurs in the center of the vortex, and that a nitrogen containing gas is introduced in the center of the vortex.

    • An aerator comprises a centrifugal pump including a rotary impeller with a plurality of blades defining an upwardly opening, axially oriented eye, inwardly of the inner ends of the blades, the blades also defining a plurality of flow passages therebetween extending generally radially outwardly from the eye. The pump further comprises an impeller housing generally surrounding the impeller and including an upper wall closely overlying a major portion of the blades, radially outermost, and defining an axially upwardly opening inlet over the impeller eye, the housing further defining at least one laterally opening outlet communicating with the radially outer extremities of the flow passages. The housing is adapted to resist rotation with respect to a container of liquid in which a pump may be disposed. The pump is also adapted to stay in a given depth range in such container. A housing extension conduit, fixed with respect to the impeller housing, extends upwardly with respect to the impeller housing. A throughway of the conduit has its lower end aligned with the inlet of the impeller housing. The length of the conduit is sufficient to position an upper end of the throughway above the liquid. A lower portion of the conduit at least partially defines a liquid intake disposed below the surface of the liquid and opening above the upper wall of the impeller housing. This liquid intake is sized to pass less liquid per unit time than the pump can handle.

    • An apparatus for aerating liquids includes a gas- and liquid-feeding rotor (6) and a surrounding stator (7) arranged in the bottom region of a container (2).
