    • A mass of solid aluminum carbide containing product is produced by a process in which a mixture is formed of an aluminum containing material and a carbonaceous material consisting of, containing or yielding carbon. Then the resulting mixture is heated to a temperature sufficient to react carbon of the carbonaceous material with the aluminum of the aluminum containing material to produce solid aluminum carbide. The solid aluminum carbide then is able to be heated with an aluminum compound selected from Al2O3, Al4CO4, AlO, Al2O and mixtures thereof, to produce aluminum metal and carbon monoxide.

    • A furnace filtration system for improving the speed and efficiency of a molten metal centrifugal impeller pump contained within a non-ferrous molten metal furnace. The system includes a filtration well located upstream of the pump well. The filtration well includes a filter having a plurality of through filter passages that are sized to prevent any solid contaminants that are larger than the pump's impeller openings from passing therethrough. By preventing any contaminants that cannot pass through the pump, the pump can be run at a higher speed. A furnaces efficiency increases with the centrifugal pump's efficiency increases with its centrifugal pump's speed along with the flow and pressure. Increased flow and pressure increases a furnace's efficiency by a) increasing the melting rate; b) decreasing the energy lost by reducing the metal temperature stratification; and c) reducing the contaminants increases the quality of the metal produced while reducing the amount of nitrogen and chlorine needed to clean the metal.

    • A single treatment compartment has a liquid metal inlet and outlet and a connection to a liquid metal-input trough. A treatment gas is injected into the liquid metal arranged in at least one sidewall of a ladles. The liquid metal inlet and outlet have an orifice positioned so as to be entirely underneath a level of the liquid metal during the treatment, in order to prevent entry of ambient air into the compartment during treatment. The treatment compartment includes an upstream part and a downstream part. The gas injection is accomplished in the upstream part. The compartment further has a filter located in the downstream part for degassing and filtering the liquid metal. Injection and filtration occur in close proximity to one another and within the same single treatment compartment.
