    • A method and apparatus for improving the capacity of a hard disk drive is provided. In one embodiment, a portion of timing information is written to a first disk prior to coupling the first disk with a hard disk drive. The first disk is then coupled with the hard disk drive having a read element aligned with a write element on a head portion of a head gimbal assembly. The timing information is then provided to the read element during a writing of a set of servo track information on the disk, wherein the portion of timing information allows the read element to be aligned with the write element on the head during the writing of the set of servo track information.

    • A method for fabricating sliders (magnetic heads) with a recessed surface around a magnetic feature such as the active components of the write head on the air-bearing surface (ABS) is described. An embodiment of the method applies a positive photoresist to the exposed ABS surface, a magnetic field is applied, then liquid ferrofluid is applied on top of the photoresist. The pole pieces around the write gap will interact with the applied magnetic field so that the field gradient is highest around the write gap and the mobile ferrofluid will preferentially collect in the areas of the surface having the highest magnetic field gradient. The opaque magnetic particles in the ferrofluid form an optical ferrofluid mask over the photoresist around the write gap. The unmasked surface of the slider is milled which results in the recession of material around the write gap.

    • A method for making a master disk to be used for nanoimprinting patterned-media magnetic recording disks uses sidewall lithography. In one implementation, the master disk substrate has a first pattern of concentric rings formed on it by sidewall lithography, followed by a second pattern of generally radially-directed pairs of parallel lines, also formed by sidewall lithography, with the pairs of parallel lines intersecting the rings. An etching process is then performed, using the upper pattern as an etch mask, to remove unprotected portions of the underlying concentric rings. This leaves a pattern of pillars on the substrate, which then serve as an etch mask for an etching process that etches unprotected portions of the master disk substrate. The resulting master disk then has pillars of substrate material arranged in a pattern of concentric rings and generally radially-directed pairs of parallel lines.
