    • An emergency lock safety belt retractor is designed to facilitate release from an inadvertent lock-up which may occur after full-speed retraction of the seat belt. This undesired lock-up is due to a latch mechanism which locks a belt spool in response to either excessively abrupt onset of extraction, such as may occur in front-end automotive accidents, or excessively abrupt cessation of retraction. This latch mechanism has two separate latches: a simple latch pawl biased away from its latched position and a more complicated lock wheel. The latch pawl is mounted on a rotary drum and in its latched position engages teeth on a stationary drum. The lock wheel is coupled for rotation with the belt spool but is free to move axially through three regimes. The lock wheel is biased toward a first axial regime in which it couples the rotary drum to the belt spool. In the second regime, it couples the belt spool to both the rotary drum and a set of stationary latch teeth, thus locking the belt spool and the rotary drum against rotation in the direction of extraction of the belt. In the third regime, the belt spool and latch teeth remain coupled while the rotary drum is released. The coupling between the lock wheel and the belt spool causes the lock wheel to move from the first to the second to the third regime as the belt is extracted slightly after the latch pawl is engaged.

    • A structure for a shock energy absorbing type steering apparatus is disclosed in which a column jacket in which a bracket member, rotatably fixed to a clamp, is attached to a vehicle body linked to a column jacket by means of welding and an enclosing body is extended in a space between the bracket member and clamp so as to enclose an upper surface area of the bracket member, thus preventing a foreign matter from invading into the inside of the bracket member. In addition, the bracket member includes a front wall to which the column jacket is perpendicularly fixed, curling portions formed on both side ends of the front wall, rollers inserted into the corresponding curling portions, and side walls extended from the curling portions in parallel to the column jacket, and cut-out portions formed on a portion of the bracket member below the curling portions. Furthermore, the bracket member includes projection portions located below the cut-out portions and engaged and penetrated through step portions of the clamp, the clamp member including pawl portions engaging bottom and front portions. Therefore, even if spot welded portions via which the bracket member and clamp are snapped due to shock generated by secondary collision, the projection portion and pawl portions serve to block the shock energy from being transmitted and prevent the bracket member from disengaging from the clamp. Shock energy is absorbed when the cut-out portions are torn off.

    • A swivel seat for a vehicle is provided with latch means which prevents the front and rear edges of the seat from being raised so as to prevent distortion of the pivot axle, the locking means and/or roller or rollers. The latch means can be actuated to its effective position, in which it prevents lift of the front or rear edge of the seat when the seat is in its normal position. Preferably, the seat also has means cooperating with rollers and a pivot axle for supporting components rotatable relative to the stationary component. The supporting means serves to hold the movable component essentially parallel to the stationary component so as to reduce the load on the rollers and the pivot axle while allowing smooth pivotal movement of the movable component relative to the stationary component.
